Home/Olympics

The Penn State women’s volleyball team has created history. While it was expected that the Nebraska Cornhuskers would once again claim the Big Ten title, Penn State had different ideas. Facing off for the ultimate showdown at the University Park recently, the Nittany Lions and the Huskers had a cracker of a game. Coming into the game, it was the Huskers who held all the aces. Driven by the shrewd tactics of coach John Cook, the Huskers achieved the impossible. After eight years of being dominated, the Huskers finally were able to beat Wisconsin, stretching their unbeaten run to 25 matches.

But it was Penn State’s night to shine. Ending their impeccable winning streak, the Lions looked locked in for business right from the word go. The Penn State women quickly took control of the game while giving no quarters to their opponent. The Huskers tried their best and even had a comeback in the second set thanks to Murray’s heroics. But Penn State looked firm in their approach to clinch the next two sets and kill the game for good.

And what was more amazing about the victory was the fact that the Nittany Lions were in the fourth position. Thus, very few gave them the chance to claim the Big 10 championships after 7 long years. But all it took was Camryn Hannah’s match-winning kill to seal the deal for the Lions. Apart from Hannah, it was Caroline Jurevicius who shone brightly on the night. During the course of the game, Jurevicius clinched an impressive 18 kills and a .414 hitting percentage to lead her team to a historic victory.

The Penn State girls were stunned as congratulatory messages poured in. In a recent trip to the iconic Beaver Stadium, the Penn State women’s volleyball team came out in front of a full-house stadium. Soaking in all the best wishes from the crowd, the jubilant team received a special honor for lifting the Big 10 championship this year. The moment was captured and uploaded on X by Penn State Women’s Volleyball. They wrote, “Win B1G title Friday… Celebrate at Beaver Stadium Saturday.”

Now, surely, the victory has been one of the best ones for Penn State for a long time. But apart from the girls, there was one particular person, without whom all this would not have been possible. After all, she ignored a life-threatening condition to commit to the welfare of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Cancer couldn’t keep Katie Schumacher-Cawley from Penn State glory.

Life seemed to be going smoothly for the Penn State Nittany Lions coach, Katie Schumacher-Cawley. However, her life was jolted by a shock when she learned about her physical health. Back on October 17, the Penn State women’s volleyball coach revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. And the results came in immediately. Riding on the back of some incredible coaching from Cawley, the Nittany Lions have registered a whopping 28 victories this season. Add to that the ultimate victory that came on November 29. Winning the Big 10 title after 7 years, there could not have been a better way to pay tribute to Cawley’s ‘never give up’ attitude. Thus, basking in the glory at the moment, both Penn State and Katie Schumacher-Cawley have successfully etched their names in the history books forever.
