For the unversed, the Russian court, on Tuesday, upheld Brittney’s 9-year sentence to a Russian penal colony. The verdict came in the aftermath of the rejection of the plea that a Moscow court had filed. Following the decision, Brittney’s fans and members of the sports fraternity came out in support of her.
Joining others, Megan and her partner Sue also extended their support and stood in solidarity with Griner and her family. Voicing their support for the basketball player, Megan shared the screenshot of Sue’s Twitter post. The WNBA champion wrote, “Absolutely heartbreaking. We miss you, BG.“
Megan further shared another screenshot of the Tweet from American professional basketball player Chiney Ogwumike. In the shared post, Chiney wrote, “My heart continues to break for BG and her family. It’s been 250 days. We must do everything in our power to get her home.” It’s been a long since Brittney has been serving her time at the Russian prison. The diplomatic talks for her release are still underway.
The story so far
In February, Griner was detained in a Moscow airport after officials found cannabis oil and vape cartridges in her luggage. However, it took until March for news of her detention to reach the United States. As she pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs into the country, the Russian court sentenced her nine-year prison term.
