The question is not about her skills as a player or professional aspirations but about something adorable. In the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when Sue led the U.S team, people could not help but ask, “Is that amazing athlete a distant relative of basketball legend Larry Bird?”
Are Sue and Larry related?
Names can be deceptive! Seeing the name “Bird,” people often make assumptions that Sue and Larry are related. If you have had the same thought, then you are not alone. Since Sue was five, countless people have bombarded her with the same question. On knowing her name and profession, the next question follows, “Are you related to Larry Bird?”
As much as everyone wanted to get a yes for the answer to the question, the facts stand otherwise. Besides the height, name, and fine basketball skills, Sue and Larry share nothing in common. Shrugging all the assumptions aside, Sue says, “That’s how it goes. I guess it could be worse, though, since he is a legend and all.”
For Sue, there is no magic gene. She is neither Larry’s daughter nor a distant relative. It’s all sheer hard work that has made her name a synonym for basketball!
Sue Bird bids adieu
After over two decades of dominating the basketball court, Sue Bird leaves her professional days behind. Announcing her retirement, the legendary player, for one last time, gazed out at her hometown crowd from the center of Climate Pledge Arena Court.
Despite her team losing in the playoffs, Sue was greeted as she left the court with loud “Thank you, Sue” cheers. Retweeting Seattle Storm’s tweet Sue could only manage a few hearts to express her emotions.
