“I Am Extremely American”: Megan Rapinoe, Who Refused to Stand for National Anthem Once, Shut Up Questions About Her Patriotism

American soccer star, Megan Rapinoe has been one of the most influential female athletes in the world. Be it on the soccer field or fighting for social causes, Megan never gives in. These qualities separate her from her contemporaries. However, she receives a lot of criticism for her outspoken personality as well.

Regardless of the hate that she received, Megan has been very focused on her purpose. On the field, her charisma is always a topic of discussion. Recently, Megan’s last-minute goal against the Orlando Pride won a lot of hearts across the world. Fans praised her for her precision and presence of mind during the last seconds of the game.

Megan Rapinoe shuts down critics

Megan is often praised for her stellar performances on the field. However, the star player’s staunch activism for equality draws some criticism towards her which she does not pay attention to. She often comes under the radar of trollers for some of her bold statements. During a match against the Chicago Red Stars, Megan refused to stand for the national anthem.

Rapinoe kneeled when the National Anthem was played. This drew a lot of criticism toward her. People started questioning her patriotism toward America. Shutting questions on her patriotism she said,” If we want to talk about the ideals we stand for, the song and the anthem and what we are founded on, I think I am extremely American.“

She handled the criticism in a very calm and composed manner. Responding to the fact that she refused to stand up for the national anthem she said, “I’m particularly and uniquely and very deeply American.“

Megan’s fight for equality

Megan Rapinoe is famous for her instrumental contribution to ending discrimination. Her advocacy for gender equality brought back worldwide attention to the suppressed topic that was very much prevalent in society. Through her monumental effort, she has motivated a lot of other influential people to speak up for the better.

The recipient of the ‘Presidential Medal of Honor’ would not end her fight unless she diminishes it from the root cause. The lawsuit that she filed along with other members of the women’s team against the US Football Federation garnered a lot of support from people. However, her fight is still underway. She testified before the US congress and hoped for a fair verdict.
