Jamaican sprinting prodigy Bouwahjgie Nkrumie made a name for himself as a talent to keep an eye on since his teens. In 2019, Nkrumie announced his arrival with a silver medal in the 100m sprint and a gold medal at the 4x100m relay at the CARIFTA Games in the Under-18 age bracket. Since then, the Jamaican track and field prodigy has gone from strength to strength, even being compared with Olympic sprinting legend Usain Bolt. Nkrumie was looking for gold at this year’s CARIFTA Games as well, but everything came crashing down for the young sprinter.
The Jamaican Men’s U20 100m sprinting record holder participated in the 2023 edition of the CARIFTA Games. After last year’s stellar performance, which saw him win a gold and a silver, Nkrumie had high hopes. However, the sprinting prodigy’s chances of winning any medals got slashed during the 100m heats.

The 19-year-old sprinter had a tremendous start to his 2023 season. On March 9, the sprinting prodigy turned in his personal best in the 100m. At the ISSA Boys and Girls Championship, Nkrumie broke the 10-second barrier after running 100m in 9.99 seconds. He became the first Jamaican Junior to break the 10-second barrier, immediately drawing comparisons with Usain Bolt.
Nkrumie felt he could go even faster and most likely aimed to surpass his personal best at this year’s CARIFTA games. On Saturday, the Jamaican sprinting star lined up for his first-round race at the 50th CARIFTA Games held at the Thomas A. Robinson stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. The 19-year-old got a blistering start and raced ahead of the competition.

The young track star kept accelerating, widening the gap between him and other competitors. However, around the 80m mark, the 2022 World U20 Championships silver medalist suddenly broke down, clutching his right leg and falling forward on the track. Nkrumie couldn’t get up as other competitors sped past him. Later, paramedics wheeled him off the track in a wheelchair.
The 19-year-old was the only Jamaican athlete to not progress beyond the heats. It looked like the last year’s 100m silver medalist might have hurt his right hamstring. However, no official statement about his injury has been released.
Fans on social media wished a quick recovery for the young star
Nkrumie’s fellow teammates and the track and field world wished for his quick recovery:
