The Racers’ Grand Prix held at the National Stadium on June 3 gave Campbell an opportunity to prove to the world, and probably himself as well, that he has what it takes. The Jamaican grabbed this opportunity and used it to his advantage. The athlete managed to achieve his fastest time since tragedy struck him in 2017. In conditions suitable for fast times, Michael Campbell opened the 2023 season with a 10.08 in the men’s 100 m ‘B’ finals.

This feat becomes even more special, considering the difficulties the sprinter has had to overcome to reach this point.  After the terrifying accident, the sprinter was dealing with the loss of a friend, in addition to the shock and pain of his extensive injuries. But such is the bravery of this 26-year-old athlete, that almost a year later, he was back to training by September 24, 2018. Two months before the accident took place, Michael Campbell ran a leg of the men’s 4x100m in the preliminary round for Jamaica at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London. He also lowered his personal best in the 100m category from 10.43 to 10.07.

Unfortunately, the accident meant that he had to take a forced hiatus that put him out of commission. However, Campbell turned his disappointment into a passion for success. According to Jamaica Gleaner, the Jamaican athlete said, “At first, it dampened my spirit, but then I said to myself that everything happens in life for a reason, and so I have to accept it and move on from there.” Clearly, that push paid off, which is evident by his performance at the Racers’ Grand Prix.

The terrible incident that changed Campbell’s life

On September 10, 2017, Campbell and his friend Scott were traveling in a car together when it veered off the road and hit the pole, and subsequently caught on fire. While Scott was burned beyond recognition, Campbell luckily survived, however, sustained severe injuries to his spine and was paralyzed. The prognosis was bad, doctors alleged that the athlete might never walk again, let alone run. Campbell, however, was not ready to give up on his dreams to be an Olympic sprinter.

After his release from the hospital, the Jamaican realized that one of his toes had movement, a sign that there might be a minute possibility Campbell would walk again. From there, he began his strenuous journey of recovery. Campbell proved all the naysayers wrong by walking on his own accord within a week. With his drive and hard work, Campbell wishes to inspire others who are in similar situations and have given up. He wants his story to be a beacon of hope for others, a lesson, that if there is a will, a way will surely follow.
