It is a very special feeling to be the oldest sprinter at age 35 to ever claim a world title. It is even more special to be a mother and win a 100m race to clinch a global title. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce achieved both these feats, the latter of which came in 2019, 24 years after Gwen Torrance became the first mother in history to achieve it. Fraser-Pryce has always been proud of her motherhood and athletics simultaneously, and she has beautifully carved out both aspects of her life. Now, in a recent instance, she is weighing in on what her son’s future endeavors might look like.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who also recorded the 3rd fastest time for women in 100m once, was recently accosted by a journalist after an event, where she was asked about her son’s prospective future plans. She had no hesitation in saying she will support him no matter what.

A tweet by Television Jamaica went, “Shelly’s (@realshellyannfp) response to whether she’ll be encouraging her son to follow in her footsteps and pursue Track and Field”. It was followed by a laughing emoji. This is due to the casual, nonchalant manner in which Fraser-Pryce responded to the question she was asked.

A clip attached alongside the tweet had Fraser-Pryce respond to the question. She said, “Anything he wants” with a smile on her face. After a while, as she was getting dressed on top of her track and field outfit, she continued, “Football or swimming”. While she did have a choice for her son herself, she won’t force them on his son. She will be completely supportive of whatever his son wants to pursue when he grows up.

Despite giving all to motherhood, Fraser-Pryce never gave up on athletics

She took to her Facebook then and wrote, “All my focus heading into training for my 2017 season was on getting healthy and putting myself in the best possible fitness to successfully defend my title in London 2017, but … here I am thinking about being the greatest mother I can be.” However, Fraser-Pryce had given up nothing on the work front despite her struggles and difficulty to balance it all.

She got back on track soon after in 2018 at the Commonwealth Games, Athletics World Cup, and then so on. Now, at age 36, Fraser-Pryce has comfortably eased her way into the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August, where she will look to bring back more medals for Jamaica.
