According to The Standard, the Birmingham World Indoor Tour, an annual indoor track and field competition held in mid-February in Birmingham, England, was canceled for the year 2024. This cancellation disappointed many track and field enthusiasts who were eagerly waiting for the event. Birmingham City Council was hit with a massive bill of £760 million (which is equivalent to nearly $921 million in US dollars or €872 million in euros) that the city had to pay to settle claims related to equal pay claims. In September 2023, the council declared bankruptcy after being hit with massive equal pay claims.

The financial crisis affected Birmingham’s ability to host large-scale sporting events like the World Indoor Tour. The cancellation of the tour was a direct result of the city council’s financial situation, which limited its ability to allocate funds for such events. UK Athletics, the governing body for athletics in the UK, also faced financial challenges. They experienced a loss of £3.7 million for the 2022–23 financial year. This loss was attributed to factors such as the lack of a title sponsor and the loss of a broadcast deal with the BBC. Birmingham’s financial problems, along with UK Athletics’ struggles, led to the city falling short of bidding to host the World Indoor Championships 2024. So how did Glasgow take advantage of this disconcerting ripple effect?
