Memories, not the runner ‘finish’ the race

Sam Norton was a rising star and this 26-year-old prodigy was for a great cause. Before starting with the 2023 Boston Marathon, held on April 17, 2023, he mentioned in a social media post that he aims to qualify for the 2024 Boston race. However, destiny had some other plans for him. The runner collapsed just before the 23rd-mile marker and on the 14th-mile stopped, as reported by the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Rushed to the hospital later, Norton was declared dead. However, his family and friends ensured that he ‘touched’ the finish line.

No, it was not his mortal remains. Nortons’s close ones decided to make his jersey run along with them in the NYC 2023 marathon. A social media post from Nicolas Heller was breath-stopping. A few-second clip features multiple moments from the race. From a marriage proposal to Sam’s jersey on a ride and his friends hugging. Accompanying the reel, was the caption that reads, “No words can express the feelings at the finish line of the NYC Marathon. This was what I saw there between 2-3:30 pm today. Congrats to everyone who took part.” A moment from the clip showed two young men hugging each other while one had Norton’s jersey hanging on a stick with him.

Supportive fans also shared their emotional sentiments for Norton. Comments like “I can’t be the only one shedding tears watching this” and “Okay, I’m crying” echoed the collective emotional response. Others remarked, “I mean if this doesn’t make you cry, what does??” Some expressed curiosity, saying, “I’m crying. What happened to Norton?

According to the Press Democrat, Norton faced a rare muscle condition after his initial collapse but rebounded swiftly, receiving medical clearance to resume running. A GoFundMe page, organized for Norton’s mother and sisters, featured a heartfelt tribute from his friend Sam Rogers of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Rogers fondly remembered Norton as someone who turned the impossible into the possible. He excelled in various aspects, from a three-year varsity football player to a dedicated student.

Rogers adds, “Sam always made the impossible seem possible,“. Continuing, he adds, “Being around Sam made us stand a little taller and work a little harder. He was a hero to so many – a friend and family member who stayed in touch, checked in, cared, and inspired us all.”
