Nike backing Quincy Hall—Is this the boost American track and field needs to dominate again?

Life has not always been kind to Quincy Hall. But that is where his grit comes from. “When you have no food. You’ve got to get your own food. No cafeteria. No study hall. None of that. You find out how to be a dog by yourself,” he had said recalling his JUCO days at the College of the Sequoias. Working two jobs to pay tuition fees at junior college, Quincy continued to fuel his sprinting career, often training all by himself. That did not go in vain.

From his maiden win at the 2017 U20 Pan American Games to his iconic performance at the 2024 US Olympic trials, Quincy has had a fascinating trajectory. That reached its culmination with his victory in the men’s 400m final in Paris where he overtook three runners in the last lap to snatch the gold. On his way to this triumph, Quincy has partnered with a sportswear giant that has remained instrumental in providing gear to bring out the best of him.

Adidas has supported Quincy Hall’s sprinting on more than one occasion, the latest being in Paris. At the 2024 Olympics, Hall’s spikes caught the attention of many. Hall wore the new Adizero Ambition shoes. The Adizero is also one of the 41 new shoes that Adidas launched in Paris. Adizero has a glass fiber-infused spike plate and a gas-infused midsole, making them perfect for mid-distance running.

The brand also provided shoes for Quincy Hall in last year’s world championships in Budapest. Donning Adizero Prime SP2, Quincy had pulled off 44:37 in the 400m race (his personal best back then) while also picking up the bronze. The pairs feature Lightstrike Pro underfoot to give super-light cushioning and energy return for next-level speed. The full-length spike plate with six pins delivers an optimal bite to get the athlete to the finish line fast.

“USA’s Quincy Hall brings his best to Budapest, turning up the heat in the 400m final to earn himself a bronze medal,” Adidas Running had posted on X, congratulating Quincy in 2023. He also took to his social media to laud the brand. In an X post, Quincy revealed how many medalists on the men’s side in the 2023 world championships donned Adidas shoes. “Thanks you adidas for creating a shoe that makes running more faster,” Quincy had written.

Interestingly, the tie-up with Adidas lands him on the same plate with one of the USA’s most prominent faces. And these two did not have the best of interactions in the recent past!

Have an interesting take?

In February, Noah Lyles and Adidas extended their contract till the end of the decade. The extension is reportedly the priciest deal in track and field since Usain Bolt’s contract with Puma. Indeed, Quincy Hall does not receive the attention Noah does. But like Noah, Quincy also gets his job right. So after becoming the first American since LaShawn Merritt in 2008 to capture gold in the one-lap race, Quincy has come up as a strong contender for the 4x400m relay gold. And this very event has been a point of contention between Noah and Quincy lately.

Last month, Noah stayed away from choosing Quincy Hall for his hypothetical 4×400 relay team. Noah himself proposed to run the second leg. He chose Rai Benjamin, a favorite in 400m hurdles to anchor the race. Quincy did not take that lightly. He instantly challenged Noah to a 400m race. Now his gold brings Quincy on a level playing ground to rekindle the cold rivalry with Noah. And Quincy did not step back.

“He’s [Noah] the Olympic champion in the 100. He may be the Olympic champion in the 200. So maybe he can see me in the 400. The Olympic champion in the 400,” Quincy said after his win. While we keep our fingers crossed to see him strike gold once again, let’s go back in time to understand this champion’s journey.

What are the major achievements of the Track and Field Star?

Hall first burst onto the scene with a standout victory in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2017 U20 Pan American Game. But it doesn’t stop there. The Hall frenzy only grew stronger after his golden performance at the 2019 NCAA 400m hurdles. Cut to 2023. Hall has sealed his name in the sprinting books by winning a bronze at the 2023 World Championships!

With constant growth and ascent, in 2024 he set a personal best of 43.80 seconds at the Herculis Diamond League in Monaco. At the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, Quincy Hall clocked 44.17 seconds in the 400 meters. Thus sealing his spot in Paris. Hall won the same, surpassing 2022 world champion Michael Norman, who finished second with 44.41 seconds.

Hall made his switch from 400-meter hurdles to the flat 400 meters just two years ago. “I’m really in my event now. I’m having fun and I’m doing good things,” he had remarked at the trials, reflecting on the switch. He once again reiterated this after his Olympic gold by calling the shift the best decision of his life. What propels him to the top?

“I don’t give up, man. I’ve got grit. I grind. I’ve got determination. Anything that I can think of that’s gonna get me to that line, I think of it. All the hurt. All the pain,” Quincy said after his Olympic victory. However, the man is not all about track.

Quincy Hall is equally invested in relaxing with his four dogs and 20 horses. “I’m going to chill and go fishing and ride my horses when I get back home. I don’t really care about nothing else. No more track. Right now it’s fishing and my dogs,” he had said after the trials. You surely deserve that, Quincy. But probably not before having one more medal from the hotly debated 4×400 relay!
