Yared Nuguse, the rising star in American middle-distance running, wakes each morning driven by a singular ambition: to clinch a medal in the 1500m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At 24, Nuguse has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with, claiming national and North American records in the 1500m, mile, and 3000m events over the past year.

Transitioning from a cautious “sit-and-kick” strategy to a more aggressive “lead-and-kick” approach, Nuguse’s dominance on the track is unquestionable. However, amidst the glory of his athletic achievements lies a story shrouded in mystery – Nuguse’s early days, his struggles, and the depths of his personal life, awaiting discovery amidst the roar of the crowd.

Early years of Yared Nuguse & how he joined the University of Notre Dame

Yared Nuguse’s journey from his birth in Louisville, Kentucky on June 1, 1999, to his current status as a rising star in track and field is a tale marked by intrigue and promise.  During his formative years in high school, Nuguse displayed a notable disinterest in sports, instead channelling his energies into academic pursuits, science workshops, and the unconventional hobby of bowling. It wasn’t until his encounter with Mick Motley, his physical education teacher, that Nuguse’s athletic potential began to surface. Impressed by Nuguse’s remarkable running performance in the one-mile event, Motley recommended him to the school’s track coach, Tim Holman.

Attending DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, Nuguse quickly established himself as a formidable presence in high school running. His successes on the track laid the foundation for his journey to the University of Notre Dame. Initially harbouring aspirations of pursuing a career in dentistry and orthodontics.  “[Orthodontics] is the doctor route that I want to pursue. For me, the reason I started running and the reason I stayed in running is because I had so much fun doing it,” He says. Currently, he is furthering his education at the university, pursuing a master’s degree in management.

Alem Nuguse and Mana Berhe; being parents as a refugee

Yared Nuguse hails from a family deeply rooted in Ethiopian heritage, born to Mana and Alem Nuguse. Their journey began in Ethiopia, where Alem met Mana in Arlington, forging a bond that transcended borders. Despite both being from Tigray, their paths didn’t converge until fate brought them together outside their homeland. Seeking a better future, the couple relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, where they established themselves as immigrants, owning a liquor store that became the cornerstone of their livelihood.

Ethiopia, steeped in ancient history and cultural richness, holds a significant place in the family’s narrative. However, political turmoil forced Alem to confront the harsh realities of oppression. He experienced firsthand the consequences of dissent in a nation grappling with conflict and socialist governance. Alem’s commitment to his principles led to persecution, prompting a perilous journey in search of safety. Escaping imprisonment, he embarked on a treacherous trek, traversing desolate landscapes alongside fellow migrants, driven more by fear of retribution than the dangers lurking in the wilderness. Eventually finding refuge in the United States, Alem’s resilience and determination not only secured political asylum but also paved the way for a new chapter in Arlington, Virginia.
