“I think these athletes represent our chances, but it is all about execution. I think over the past years, it (Jamaican men’s athletics) has been struggling, but I do think that Oblique has been keeping it alive,” says 100m icon, Usain Bolt. Ever since Bolt, announced his departure from track, the Jamaican sprinting frenzy hit an era of gloom! But with Seville on the tracks, things are looking up. As Bolt himself, points out, “He has made all the finals so far; it is just for him to now get in the top three. And I think it’s just consistency.”

With rigorous regimes and unfaltering dedication, Seville is set to bring back Jamaica’s sprinting vibrance. He grew up in St. Thomas and later Kingston, soaking in the community’s passion for athletics. Seville faced his first major blow in 2018 after his father Gerald passed away. Despite Seville and his family facing severe financial struggles, he did not give up on athletics. Instead, it drove him to do better. And in true Jamaican style, he made a surprising comeback winning the CARIFTA Games and the Pan American U20 Championships.

Oblique Seville has had his track career goals set since he was fourteen years old

Oblique Seville’s sprinting career started with a bang! But it also had a clear vision! In January 2016, Seville started his professional track journey. He made his debut soon after at the Manchester Under-16 event, where he finished sixth in the same. By 2017, Seville’s hard work had started to pay off, as he took home his first big win at the JAAA/PUMA Kirkvine Development Meet.

Fast forward to the present day where Seville’s accomplishments are nothing short of impressive!He made the headlines twice this year alone with his 100m and 200m best where he clocked a time of 9.82 seconds and 20.17 seconds respectively. And who can forget the bronze in 4×100 meters at the 2023 World Championships? Bolt and Seville apart from their shared roots also share the same coach! Glen Mills is a man with many feathers on his glorious crown. Talking about Seville he said, “I am pleased with his development. I am pleased that he is developing in the way that I am working towards. He is getting stronger, we continue to work on technique, but in terms of where he is, I am quite pleased with his development so far.” As Seville gears up for the Paris 2024 Olympics, his consistent growth trajectory promises a thrilling spectacle on the track!
