At the 2023 Brussels Diamond League, Kenny Bednarek, aka “Kung Fu Kenny,” displayed a masterful performance in the men’s 200m, holding off Team GB’s Zharnel Hughes and Canada’s Andre De Grasse. Running in lane seven, Bednarek executed a flawless bend and crossed the finish line with a season’s best time of 19.79, securing victory. Bednarek’s electrifying run not only secured him the top spot but also ignited a sense of pride that prompted him to wave the American flag in celebration. It was a scene reminiscent of another American sprinting sensation, Noah Lyles.

Zharnel Hughes, the world 100m bronze medallist, made a valiant effort but couldn’t catch the 24-year-old American “Kung Fu Kenny,” at Brussels. Andre De Grasse, the reigning men’s 200m Olympic gold medalist, also delivered a season’s best performance, taking third place in 19.89. The King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels witnessed this thrilling showdown, representing the last chance for track and field stars to earn their spots in the Diamond League Finals. Despite his impressive track record, Bednarek expressed his desire to move beyond silver medals and mark his name in the sport.

His goal for the 2023 season was clear – to compete in both the 100m and 200m events at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. His ambition was fueled by the desire to shed the “Mr. Silver” label that had accompanied his career.

In pursuit of his goals, Bednarek participated in the Kip Keino Classic on May 13, 2023, in Nairobi, where he raced in the men’s 100m alongside fellow American sprinter Marvin Bracy and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Ferdinand Omanyala.
