On June 18, the world celebrated the grand occasion of Father’s Day. Amidst many thoughtful messages of people wishing their fathers, sports analyst, Darren Rovell also shared a touching story on the occasion. He remembered the heart-warming moment of the father-son duo, Jim and Derek Redmond from 1988. 57-year-old British sprinter Derek Redmond had won gold medals in the 4×400 meters relay at the World Championships and European Championships. However, his amazing career saw an unexpected hurdle at the 1988 Olympics.
On Father’s Day, Rovell took to his Instagram to share a nostalgic video of Derek Redmond’s performance at the 1988 Olympics in the 400 m category. Although, the athlete had a good start at the race, soon he lost his ability to run properly. At that moment, his father Jim Redmond showed the most inspiring gesture to the world.

The Instagram video featured Derek Redmond racing in Seoul amidst a crowd of 65,000 people at the Olympics. However, while racing, he experienced a sudden discomfort in his Achilles tendon injury. In no time, his pace slowed and he began to struggle to walk ahead. However, he wanted to finish the race despite the pain. Looking at his son, Jim waited no longer, he ran down the stairs in the crowd, blew by security, and went on the track to join his son. The entire stadium cheered for the duo as they finished the race together, with Jim letting his son lean on him. The supportive and loving gesture created one of the most memorable Olympic moments ever.

After the moment at the race track, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave Derek a DNF (did not finish) because he was helped to finish the race. Despite the situation, his father stated in the conference, “I’m the proudest father alive. I’m prouder of him than I would have been if he won the gold medal.”
Moreover, the clip of Jim supporting his son has gained several views on YouTube. In fact, when Jim Redmond died last year, the IOC issued a statement, the only time it had ever done so for the death of an athlete’s parent. The duo truly won the hearts of the people with their memorable moment.
