With minimal track facilities and lightning speed, Usain Bolt started his journey to the pinnacle at William Knibb High School in Jamaica. Nevertheless, he always remained connected with his roots all while embracing his Jamaican legacy. Hence, in 2015, when the Lightning Bolt donated $1.3 million to his financially challenged old school in Jamaica, he was “more than happy.” But, he wanted to do more to elevate his village into a modern town.

Therefore, to empower Sherwood Content – the place where he grew up, Bolt “converted the village of his parents into a modern town with contemporary facilities.” He introduced a social infrastructure in the village, including a school, recreational facilities, health center, and playground for children to make it more habitable for all. In return, he made a haven in the hearts of millions.

The story began when Bolt, eager to provide his parents with a comfortable life, wanted to purchase them a house in the city. However, his parents politely declined and expressed their deep attachment to the village in Trelawny Parish, they called home for decades, and their reluctance to leave behind cherished neighbors and friends. Rather than insisting on relocating them, he decided to bring some development and contemporary facilities directly to the village.

He ensured that his parents and the entire community could enjoy an enhanced quality of life without sacrificing their cherished bonds and way of life. Interestingly, as the sprinter made sure that Sherwood Content prospers with modernized facilities, the Lightning Bolt’s fandom took a moment to shower their regards to his act of philanthropy.

Usain Bolt garners love as he embraces his roots with another act of generosity

As they express their love and respect for Bolt, a multitude of fans also regarded the sprinter for his 2015 donation to his alma mater. He provided William Knibb Memorial High School with a substantial donation of £838,000 ($1.3 million) along with brand-new sporting gear. It was the same ground where he began his running career as a child.

While one wrote, “Good job Mr Bolt, we need more Jamaicans like you. Nuff blessings”, another one penned, “Well done, King Usain Bolt. Much respect and honour from me to you.”

One fan even wanted to nominate Bolt as a President, by stating, “That is a gentleman that loves…I nominate him for President, Village Chief.”

Mentions like, “Now that’s what makes him a champion of his people,” “Much blessings and respect! …in every aspect!,” and “Mother’s Wisdom….makes the whole wide world better…love you, mom. Thank you, son, for listening…” brimmed the comment section to the hilt.

More so, back in 2012, ‘The Usain Bolt Foundation’ funded the construction of a state-of-the-art dining room facility at William Knibb Memorial High School. Then, in 2013, the foundation expanded its list to include the handing over of a multipurpose court of the Sherwood Content community in Trelawny in collaboration with the Digicel Foundation. Acknowledging this, a fan conceded, “Well done!!! Your parents are very proud of you..I’m proud of u too .God bless u abudantly!!”

With the motto ‘Daring Youth to Sprint to Big Dreams’, The Usain Bolt Foundation has been supporting activities and empowering youth to realise their dreams all while bringing relief to the vulnerable members of the Jamaican community. It indeed has stayed true to its mission of encouraging “cultural development for a positive change.” And with the recent modernization of his village, Bolt continues to embrace his Jamaican roots, don’t you agree?
