The 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest was one to remember for the U.S. track team. Their whole track team came into the tournament on the backs of some high-flying performances at the U.S. Championships last month. Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson were the two star players representing their country in their respective divisions. Richardson won three tournaments overall, two golds and one bronze. While Lyles also took home three golds from Budapest.

Joining these two stars were Gabby Thomas, who secured a silver in the women’s 200m; Keni Harrison who won silver for the 100m hurdles; and Shamier Little who won silver in the 400m hurdles, among a host of other American athletes. While U.S. athletes managed medals in shotput and heptathlon, Noah Lyles remained the most talked about athlete on the track with his three golds.

Lyles started his medal tally by becoming the men’s 100m world champion with a personal best time of 9.83 seconds. He missed Usain Bolt’s 100m world record of 9.58 seconds by a narrow 0.25 seconds. The newly crowned world champion then set his sights on the 200m event. Lyles blew all competition in the 200m finals as he successfully defended his 200m world title with a time of 19.51 seconds. His compatriot Erriyon Knighton had to settle for silver as he clocked a time of 19.75 seconds. With two gold medals secured, the track sensation now waited for the men’s 4x100m relay. An event that was swept by the USA, with Lyles anchoring the team to gold with a time of 37.38 seconds.

This is how Noah Lyles not only completed his hat trick of golds but also became a 6-time world champion. His performances were almost equally matched by Sha’Carri Richardson, who won gold for the women’s 100m event and defeated her Jamaican rival Shericka Jackson in the process. Richardson then fought Gabby Thomas and Shericka Jackson in the 200m but had to settle for bronze. However, she did end up running her personal best time in the 200m discipline. She then, similar to Lyles, anchored the women’s 4x100m relay team to a gold medal in a championship record time of 41.03 seconds. As the track events concluded, Lyles took to his Instagram to showcase the brilliance and utter domination of the U.S. men’s and women’s track teams, and the fans outpoured their love in the comment section.
