When track and field athlete Tori Bowie passed away in April 2023, little did she know that her death would cause such a large ripple effect. Now, nearly two months later, as autopsy reports suggest that she died of childbirth complications, her former teammates are raising their voices in unison. One such teammate is fellow track and field legend and multiple Olympic gold medalist, Allyson Felix. Felix, besides being a champion sprinter, is a mother as well, and she too has suffered pregnancy complications before. Luckily, she came out of it on the right side. However, the constant issues in the same regard that women face in the US, is a matter of concern for which Felix wants to do something.

Allyson Felix recently took to her Instagram and shared a picture of Tori Bowie, followed by another one of the US 4×100-meter women’s relay team members that won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her post, alongside it, shared a heartbreaking fact about 3 out of those 4 athletes who suffered similar complications during childbirth.

7x Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix recently took to her Instagram and wrote, “These are my teammates. We are Olympic champions. Three of us tried to give birth. Two of us experienced near-death complications. One of us died. We have to, and we will do more. Tori?s death cannot and will not be in vain”. In the picture, the 4 Olympic gold medalist members were standing together with the US flag.

Tori Bowie, Allyson Felix, English Gardner, and Tianna Bartoletta, were the 4 women who won the gold medals in Rio in 2016. While Bowie has sadly passed away, Bartoletta and Felix too nearly died due to similar pregnancy complications. In 2018, during the 32nd week of Felix’s pregnancy, doctors discovered that Felix had pre-eclampsia, a condition that leads to high blood pressure and leading to childbirth effects.

Tori Bowie suffered from eclampsia, the later stage of it, and sadly succumbed to it. She was 8 months pregnant, and hence, the effects were of far more consequence on her.

Why African-American women continue to suffer

The condition of eclampsia is significantly higher in African-American women, as per reports. As this requires special care and attention, the lack of which on timeless occasions, also forced Felix to continue her fight in this matter. Bortoletta, her teammate from Rio 2016, also suffered from childbirth complications, and in the wake of news about Bowie’s cause of death, she too took to her Instagram and shared her side of the story. She was 26 weeks pregnant when she suffered the same, and was lucky to come out safe.

Allyson Felix wrote at the end of her Instagram post, “At the link in bio, I share my thoughts with @time on the black maternal health crisis we are facing”. Felix has been an advocate in fighting for equal health benefits for all Americans, irrespective of their gender, race, creed, etc. In the wake of Bowie passing away, she continues to fight the same.
