The 20-year-old prodigy is currently trending for the highest milestone of his career. He not only has set his personal bests at 800m, 1500m, and 3000m, but also has two milestone titles under his name. Commencing in 2023, the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga are among the most celebrated events globally. 

Along similar lines, the American runner not only won the title but also made it to break the previous record. Thus, rounding out the podium at Gold in just 3:56.13 on a Sunday morning. Nonetheless, he poured the blood and sweat into the practice to achieve these desired results. But What does setting a world record in a road mile take?

Beating Previous Record Holder to Break Records

On Sunday morning, Hobbs Kessler, at a lightning-fast speed, finished the race before others. Despite having fierce and close competition, he sprinted, taking five seconds off the previous world record. Conversely, Callum Elson made it to silver in 3:56.41, whereas previous record holder Sam Prakel settled for Bronze in 3:56.43. 

Although the race from the beginning was quite the opposite of the results, Kenya’s U20 World mile record Holder Reynold Kipkorir Cheruiyot led the race from the start. But eventually, Kessler positioned himself at the front of Prakel. Despite making all efforts to charge along with Kessler, Prakel could not keep up with the high school track and field phenom. 

Eventually, Kessler became not only entitled to USD 10K for his impressive win but also USD 50K for breaking the world record. In a decision by the World Athletics Council in 2023, they officially recognized his success as a world record discipline. Nevertheless, this event etched itself into the annals of athletics history as the most challenging competition, with the first nine men finishing within a 2-second gap from one another.

What’s Next for Hobbs Kessler after this Historic Achievement?

This world success is not the first time for Kessler, as he had been making headlines since he was 17. Eventually, he broke the US high school indoor mile record by bettering the previous national 1500m world record. In addition, Kessler turned pro and signed a deal with Adidas after this event. However, Winning the World Athletics Road Running Championship is a milestone in Kessler’s athletic career.

“It’s been a really up and down year and I luckily got in really good shape at the end of the season,” Kessler expressed to World Athletics org. “I just bought a house two weeks ago so now I have some money for furniture, I guess.” He added.

Being in his teenage, the athlete has a long journey to go. However, being a world record holder in these junior years, Kessler is going to be a prominent figure in athletics.
