At just 16 years old, Quincy Wilson has already become one to watch out for in the world of track and field. Hailing from Potomac, Maryland, Wilson has been shaking up the record books since he burst onto the scene. He’s got the indoor world record for the under-18 age group in the 400 meters, clocking in at an astonishing 45.76 seconds at the 2024 New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston. But that’s not all—he’s just as impressive outdoors, clocking 45.19 seconds in the 400m at the Florida Relays.

That made it the fastest time in the U.S. for 2024 and the sixth-fastest globally. And let’s not forget his indoor world record for the 500m in the 18 and under category, with a time of 1:01.27. Wilson’s exceptional talent has not gone unnoticed, as he earned himself a spot in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials thanks to his qualifying time. And now, alongside a burgeoning career, moments after he joined the same league as Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic, he was applauded by an Olympic legend and track insiders alike.

In an Instagram post by Justin Gatlin and Rodney A. Green, hosts of the Ready Set Go podcast, a snippet was shared from their latest episode featuring Andrew Martin, the CEO of Total Running Productions. In the video, the three track fanatics discussed one rising star: Quincy Wilson. The conversation kicked off with Rodney expressing his amazement at Quincy’s performance, stating, “That young kid is amazing,” and highlighting his incredible relay split time of 44.37 seconds in the 4x400m prelims at the Penn Relays. That little boy, that little 10th grader Rodney exclaimed. Five-time Olympic medalist Justin Gatlin chimed in, saying, I feel like we haven’t had this much excitement behind a young 400-meter runner since, well, at least in America, since LaShawn (Merritt), right?”

Rodney humorously pointed out that while LaShawn was older, Quincy Wilson was just in 10th grade, adding, “He’s not a senior. He’s not a junior, bro. This dude, you know, he’s just talking to his ma, he’s just getting his driver’s license. This kid can’t even drive to practice.” Chiming in on the merits of under-18 world record holder Quincy Wilson, Andrew Martin pointed out all his records of the year as stated in his World Athletics profile, saying how he achieved 33.11 300m, 45.1 400m, he ran a 1.51 800m just for fun,” which elicited shocked yet amazed reactions from all three track and field pundits. As we reflect on the brilliant talents of this prodigy, it’s important to note that this post comes just a day after Quincy joined the big leagues in a partnership deal that includes sports icons Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic on the same roster.
