Recent updates, from USATF reveal an announcement; there won’t be a Team USA representing them at the event. While this decision might disappoint aspiring participants it stems from their commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone involved. Athletes who were aiming for spots on this team would have initially qualified through performances at the USATF Under 20 Championships scheduled for June 12-13 2024 in Eugene.

This decision though challenging was made after consideration, over months taking into consideration various important factors. Safety was a priority that stood out initially. The US State Department has issued warnings regarding travel, due to unrest in the area, which could potentially put athletes, coaches, managers, and staff at risk.
Additionally, the timing of the event presented hurdles. With the event set for August 26 -31, it coincides with the end of the summer Olympics creating challenges for school and college athletes who may have already returned to school or campuses for the academic year. Furthermore, athletes involved in distance or cross country events at schools and colleges would be, in the stages of their seasons making it more challenging for them to participate.
In addition to these concerns, there’s the issue of competitive readiness. Despite the competitive opportunities provided by USATF’s Junior Olympic program, the gap between the conclusion of the USATF U20 Championships in mid-June and the late August commencement of the event in Peru spans nearly 11 weeks. This extended period without adequate competitive opportunities would significantly impede the competitive preparedness of Team USA athletes for a world-level competition of this magnitude.
