Will NBA-like honors finally give track and field stars the recognition they deserve?

Track and field is going through an era of change. After the Paris Olympics, numerous athletes are skipping meets and instead competing in newer competitions backed by rich celebrities. The main examples are Gabby Thomas partnering with Alexis Ohanian for Athlos and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone partnering with Michael Johnson for the Grand Slam Prix. They have skipped the Diamond League in favor of these competitions, as they are said to have better financial benefits for the athletes.

However, the Diamond League must do something so the athletes are satisfied and they keep coming back to compete in the meet. A new form of innovation might be required for this. That is exactly what the organizers of the Silesia Diamond League thought, introducing a new trophy with higher added stakes, increasing the quality of the competition.

The Silesia Diamond meet has promised a trophy that no one in track and field has ever seen before. At a

press conference before the stadium event, many star athletes like Mondo Duplantis and Femke Bol answered questions. But, it was one moment at the event that intrigued everyone present there. The competition has introduced a new rule where the athlete who earns the most points at the World Athletic table will be recognized as the MVP (Most Valuable Player). The competition will award them a ring similar to the ones given to the champions of the NBA and NFL.

Piotr Malachowski, the sports director of the meet, addressed the athletes, saying, “We do have a surprise for all of you. Do you know that you can compete against each other? Do you know? Now you know it. We have a MVP award for you tomorrow. Like MVP award will go to the athlete who will get the highest points according to the World Athletics tables. This is the ring like the NFL champion ring, NBA champion ring. 14 carats gold with a diamond on top.” This is a huge statement by the meet as the ornaments in the metal are no joke and must have cost a lot.

The winner will also get $10,000 cash prize. It is an interesting initiative taken by the organizers to pique interest in it. Moreover, it seems like the plan has already started to work. Athletes have already started claiming that they’ll win the award.

Mondo Duplantis cheekily put his claim to the ring for which he has to break the World record again

Mondo Duplantis, who has pretty much won everything he has competed in at the mere age of 24, seemed pretty upbeat about the idea of another trophy he could take home. “It is nice. It would look good on my shelf.” he suggested with a wink. Well, everyone pretty much might just take this seriously because he is arguably the favorite for this. But what does he have to do to make this reality? It’s a pretty straightforward task.

Mondo Duplantis has to do exactly what he’s known for. He has to lower the world record again, marking the tenth time in his career. The pole vaulter clearing the 6.26 meters barrier would be most probably enough for him to get the ring. But what do the other athletes need to do to stake their claim in it? The maths again is not complicated at all. They basically will have to break the world record in their respective sport. That would give them enough points at the World Athletics table, gifting them the ring. It’ll be quite interesting to see who gets hands on this unique trophy. For the first time ever, athletes of different sports will be practically competing against each other, thus increasing the interest in the tournament. What do you think? Who will win the inaugural ring?
