Adeptly maneuvering multiple tasks at one time isn’t everyone’s cup of how, but one athlete does it best, sans complaints. Juggling home duties and racing on the track seems like a hard nut to crack, but this does not apply to the Kenya-born US marathon athlete, Betsy Saina. 2023 has seen a stellar line-up of US athletes making it big, taking their families over the moon. Track and field athletes, especially, didn’t have anything to hold them back in the past year.

Moreover, icons of color celebrated record podiums across the sporting realm like no other. Betsy Saina made headlines, not only for her athletic finesse but also for her indomitable determination, and there’s an adorable force behind it all.

Resorting to her Instagram, the 35-year-old 3x NCAA champion, Betsy Saina, has posted a heartfelt note for her son. Bringing the world at her feet in support, the one who breastfed while training and racing has none but her son above it all. The caption says, “My little man has taught me to be resilient and brave. Everything I do he is the priority before anything else comes. On Saturday will be running for him, He has change my life in many ways, I am the happiest woman in the world”. Through her words and struggle stories, Betsy has proven herself to be a formidable soul time and again. The village girl” who ran barefoot in Kenya, once struggled to cope with the transition to spikes.

But looking at her now, it’s hard to comprehend the hardships she had left behind successfully. Going into Saturday’s Olympic Marathon Trials, Betsy looks forward to constructing her first Olympic team. But her story made her what she is, so taking a walk down that lane deserves a little of our time.

The Olympics is nearing, and it’s a trip down memory lane

She gave birth to her son Kalya in 2021, which meant an extended time away from her sport. Returning to Kenya and training under Nicholas Joech, while also taking care of her little one, seemed easy then. But her return to the track in 2023 Tokyo Marathon had proven what a fine athlete she is. Chopping off 57 seconds from her personal best, she finished fifth in 2:21:20.

Marathoning after birthing, despite being fit, was beyond anyone’s dizziest daydreams. I just had a human being. We knew I was fit, but I was really, really scared because it’s the first marathon after a long time”. Interestingly, that race made her an American favorite and also showed her the right path of success. With Paris in mind, the soil where she already made big strides in 2018, Betsy Saina is coming for her rivals.
