The world of athletics is currently going through the most exciting of all times, and with the World Athletics Championships next month, the excitement is only going to get double. As track and field continue to take center stage of all events, every day brings in exciting news from that front. Shericka Jackson’s record-breaking, lightning-fast sprint in 100m and 200m events at the Jamaica Nationals took the sporting world by storm a few days ago. In a few hours’ time, an American track star broke her record. She also had a few things to say about the Jamaican speedster just before she broke her record.

Gabby Thomas is an American athlete who is quick on her feet and is here to dominate. She held the record for 200m with 21.8 seconds, which was broken by Shericka Jackson. Thomas didn’t waste time in reclaiming her record with 21.6 seconds this time.

A tweet by Emmanuel Acho went, “American 200m sprinter, Gabby Thomas, after seeing Shericka Jackson run 21.7 and steal back the World Lead just moments after Gabby ran 21.8”. A quote from Thomas and a video of her saying it was also posted. She said, “I’m on my phone, I saw Shericka… (laughs) 21.7, I was like ‘They (the Jamaicans) can’t let us have anything’. Anything”.

Although Thomas said it with a smile on her face and delight for Jackson in her heart, she was dead serious about getting back her title. In an hour or so, Gabby Thomas ran the 200m in the USATF and broke Shericka Jackson’s record. It was sheer grit and determination of another level.

Thomas and Jackson might soon lock horns in the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest. However, they would also be joined by other fellow track athletes, some of whom are from their respective nations and are in blazing hot form.

The track and field clashes are going to get severely intense

While Jackson and Thomas have been going back and forth in their record claim, further intensifying their rivalry, the US-Jamaica rivalry is also solidified by Sha’Carri Richardson, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, among others. Sha’Carri Richardson is having the time of her life this year on the track, and she also registered a world record in 100m at the Doha Diamond League. Shericka Jackson snatched that record too. Richardson is yet to claim it back if she does.
