Grant Holloway's GOAT status: Well-deserved or too soon to call?

When it comes to track and field, connoisseurs can hardly ever agree on a single star as the GOAT. Unless you’re someone like Usain Bolt, of course. But some sprinters still stand out with their relentless pursuit of greatness. Olympic gold medalist Grant Holloway seems to be one of these track stars who veterans can agree upon as one of the best to grace the sport.

The hurdling specialist remains a force to be reckoned with. Ever since his days with the Florida Gators, Holloway has made heads turn with blazing speeds, and his consistency is something even seasoned track veterans cannot overlook. So much so, that they’re even up for bestowing the 26-year-old with the ultimate honor.

In a YouTube upload from September 16 of the Ready Set Go podcast, with the 20024 Olympic gold medalist Justin Gatlin, retired sprinter Rodney Green proclaimed Holloway as the GOAT when it comes to the 110mH race. “Grant Halloween. He ran 12.99, man. He is officially the guy who ran the most sub-13s in the event and the history of the event,” Green noted, underscoring how Holloway has been incredibly consistent throughout his career. Considering how the Chesapeake native is also the world record holder in the 60mH event, there can be no doubt that Holloway’s name will go down in history, opines Green.

…he has the World Championships crown, and he has the Olympic crown. He has them at the same time, you know what I mean?” Green stated further, and Gatlin could only nod in agreement. With that, the hosts of the podcast surmised that Holloway is easily the most prominent name when it comes to his event (the 110mH). Green concluded his words by saying, “He’s the best,” and his colleague also acknowledged Holloway as the true GOAT.

Referring to how Holloway’s PB is just 0.01 seconds off the world record in the 100mH race, Green further mentioned how his opinion of Holloway is backed by iconic hurdlers like David Oliver. “I’ve heard great hurdlers who’ve hurdled before him say he’s the best that they’ve ever seen,” said the podcast host. Subsequently, Gatlin had one request to make to Holloway that would make the latter the undisputed king in the event. “Break this world record man,” Gatlin urged, and considering how Holloway has been on the top of his game, it shouldn’t be surprising to see him do so either. But when?

Lunging over hurdles on the track has never looked so easy, and the freshly crowned Olympic gold champ has been incredible at it. He’s won almost all races he has participated in this year, underscoring his incredible skills as a track celebrity. Apart from his second-place finish at the Silesia Diamond League, Holloway has been able to trounce almost everything thrown at him, and fans were excited to see him close out the season in style in Brussels at the 2024 DL finale. But the organizers and Holloway came to an impasse over his participation fee and the latter decided to abruptly pull out of the Belgian capital. Naturally, fans were heartbroken, but the three-time World Championships gold medalist was firm about his stance. “Shame that they doing athletes like that,” he took a dig at the organizers and the fans could almost feel his annoyance.

The second-fastest man in history in the 100m hurdles race, Holloway remains a favorite in the eyes of his loyalists, and not just for his on-track accolades. In Paris, we also got to learn about the athlete’s charitable side, as he revealed his upcoming plans for the needy. “Yeah, so right after the Olympics is done, I’m actually doing a charity event, a golf charity event in October. We’re going to try to raise as much money as we can to, you know, feed people for Thanksgiving, as well as give some Christmas gifts out to some less fortunate families,” Holloway told us in an exclusive interview, and we can’t help but fall in love with The Flamingo all over again. How much do you want to see Holloay cement his status as the greatest 100m hurdler of all time? How or where do you want to see him bag the coveted G.O.A.T. title?
