When Junelle Bromfield landed in Paris in late July, she felt unsure. “The way the internet was behaving, I did not know how I would be received,” explained the track and field star while talking to Sim Clarke Cooper. Yet, why had the internet branded her trailer to her team? Unfortunately, it was something boyfriend Noah Lyles said, and the internet couldn’t let go.

“I have been getting the drama from Jamaican camps for at least five years now,” Bromfield’s boyfriend and American track icon Noah Lyles said. However, the internet translated Lyles’ comment on the Track World News podcast as Bromfield passing him inside information on Team Jamaica. Thankfully, Jamaican track and field legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce put her at ease in her moment of doubt.

“When I got there (Olympic Village) the way the internet was behaving, I didn’t know how I would be received. I got there Shelly-Ann was the first one to be like, “Hot girl Junelle!” She greeted me just like normal.” Junelle Bromfield said on Sim Soul Sessions Season 10. Although Mommy Rocket led the way, everyone on the Jamaican team was equally respectful toward their Olympic teammate. In fact, Bromfield’s room bustled with laughter and conversation every night.

“Every night, my room would be full,” added the 26-year-old. From athletes such as Shell-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who just wanted to chat, to her roommate Shashalee Forbes, everyone helped Bromfield overcome the doubt that the online backlash had instilled in her. “Talking about my teammates actually make me emotional because like they were just there every night,” added the track star.

When Junelle Bromfield first heard what Noah Lyles said, she felt it would “blow over.” However, when things escalated, the athlete blocked out the negativity. “Three years ago, I would probably be in the corner somewhere every day crying,” the Olympic bronze medalist confessed.

Yet, this time she focused on the Games instead of breaking down from the backlash. The fact that her Jamaican track and field teammates had her back only made things better. And despite representing different nations, the 400-meter relay special found Noah Lyles beside her.

Shell-Ann Fraser-Pryce isn’t the only one who had Junelle Bromfield’s back

Noah Lyles broke the Team USA gold medal curse in the Olympic 100m sprint. Winning the race by five-thousandths of a second, the 27-year-old ran to the stands. Right after embracing his mother, Keisha Caine Bishop, the Olympic champion embraced Bromfield. And just as Junelle Bromfield was there to celebrate the historic moment, Lyles was there during the tough time.

While it had become abundantly clear that the internet had blown Lyles’ words out of proportion, he stood up for Junelle Bromfield. “I just want to say how incredibly proud I am of my GF and give her the flowers she deserves now,” the six-time world champion wrote on X. “She has been through so much in her life that I could never imagine fighting through,” added Lyles.

So while many on social media spewed vitriol toward Junelle Bromfield, she found solace in her teammates. Although Noah Lyles’ words had brought the storm, the couple knew Lyles didn’t make any accusation, and so did Team Jamaica. After all, when eight-time Olympic medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is the first to greet you, you’ve got nothing to worry about.
