At the 2024 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Arkansas Men’s and Women’s teams have emerged as the dominant force, securing yet another sweep of indoor titles. For the fifth consecutive year, the Razorbacks have portrayed their prowess to solidify their status as the SEC track and field powerhouse.

However, Arkansas is not the only team under the spotlight these days. Interestingly, the 2022 Track and Field Champion has electrified the arena with a groundbreaking performance. Besides this, she also made waves by etching her name in the annals of NCAA history at the Tyson Sports Complex at Fayetteville.

Lamara Distin’s record-breaking run

After the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded, Texas A&M Track & Field/Cross Country took it to their official X account and posted pictures of the formidable force, Lamara Distin. Along with the pictures, they wrote, “The history making moment 2.00m/6-6.75 for the NCAA record.

At the championships, Lamara Distin, the 22-year-old Commonwealth Games champion and 2023 World Championships finalist, once again showcased her dominance on the track and field stage. She performed exceptionally well to clear the height of 2.00 meters (6-6.75), rewriting history as the first female high jumper to achieve such a remarkable feat.

The monumental leap surpassed her personal best of 1.95 meters and shattered the previous national record of 1.87 meters, equalling the facility record. However, her outstanding achievements didn’t stop there. Distin also surpassed the previous NCAA record of 1.98 meters set by Hooker Tex back in 2016. In the thrilling display of athleticism, Distin also overtook Arkansas’ Rachel Glenn and Georgia’s Elena Kulichenko. But, she is not the only Jamaican winner at the event who broke records.

Jamaicans taking up the spotlight at track and field

Apart from Distin, many Jamaican athletes shone bright at the SEC Indoor Track and field championships. Following the same path, Nia Robinson, representing Arkansas, made her mark on the event by achieving a new personal record of 1.75 meters despite finishing 12th place this Saturday.

Meanwhile, Romaine Beckford set a record by clearing the bar at 2.25 meters to secure a victory over Mississippi State’s Sherman Hawkins and Texas’s Usan Perera. In addition, Brianna Lyston of LSU on the tracks continued her impressive form as she accomplished a record-equalling performance of 7.08 seconds in a 60 meters dash to match the timing set by another Jamaican, Remona Burchell, in 2015.
