Is Quincy Wilson the next big thing in track and field, or just another fleeting sensation?

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” Echoing the statement made on her Instagram three weeks ago, Quincy Wilson has blown people away with stellar back-to-back performances on the track, successfully earning a spot on Team USA for the Paris Olympics. Shortly after, he turned heads at the Holloway Pro Classic. In the 400m event, Quincy Wilson blazed past his competitors, clocking an awe-inspiring time of 44.20 seconds. With this, the wunderkind had reset a new U18 men’s world record, shattering his own U.S. high school record as well. And his coach couldn’t agree more.

Joe Lee, his coach, continues to be amazed by the youngster’s prowess on the track. After receiving news of Wilson’s Olympic qualification, the Bullis track and field head coach was ecstatic for the teenage prodigy. Lee never misses an opportunity to sing praises for the 16-year-old, always stating how he is an exceptional tutee. As a cherry on top, just this month, the coach found a chance to reveal how the teen prodigy is just as focused when he’s off the field too.

Lee appeared on The Kevin Sheehan Show on July 2 to discuss what it’s like to coach the 16-year-old and his contention at the Paris Olympics. After Sheehan noted how Wilson had just completed his sophomore year at Bullis, he asked the coach to let fans in on what the youngest would-be Olympian is like. He is not imposing in stature, but he is a terror when it comes to being disciplined and giving everything he can to his craft.” 2024 has been an incredible year for Quincy Wilson, and if his coach’s words are any proof, he refuses to slow down.

Quincy Wilson has always excelled on the track, and one would generally expect athletes to falter behind in their studies while focusing on their sport. Surprisingly, the wunderkind is great when it comes to academics as well. He is a straight-A student; never gotten a B in his entire high school career,” Lee muses. There did come a time when the sprinter faltered. However, after his coach stated that he needed to do better, he went ahead and did just that! “He was close to getting a B+ one time, and that was like an 89.9. And then he quickly brought that up and straight-A student. Phenomenal kid!” If the 16-year-old can keep up with both his competitors on the track and his test scores, he’s rightfully earned the ‘Star Pupil’ tag! Beyond his athletics, Lee highlights what an incredible individual he is.

He’s well beyond his years in just the way he presents himself. So, shout out to his parents for that; fun-loving kid.” Despite making it big at such a budding age, Lee claims he’s just like any regular teen. “Loves to do regular teenage kid stuff like playing Call of Duty and all that.” This doesn’t come as a surprise, since that’s exactly what Wilson wanted to do after his stellar performance at the U.S. Olympic Trials. His coach has previously stated that his kindness is one of the many qualities that make the teen stand out. But that’s not all he had to say about his student!

Seeing how far Quincy Wilson has gotten in such a short time, the coach stated how the experience has been for him. “He’s a great young man, and I’m really proud to coach him, and we’re proud to have him a part of our school.” The youngest star to make it on Team USA truly has a long way to go, and Lee will be right by his side for the ride. Now that the Bullis coach has given the teen’s parents a shoutout, it calls for recognition of the part that they played in helping him shine as brightly as he has.

The 16-year-old’s parents are his biggest cheerleaders

Quincy comes from a family of athletes. His father, Roy Wilson, was a football player at the Navel Academy, and mama Wilson, Monique, made heads turn on the basketball court and on the soccer field. She was even inducted into Severn School’s athletic hall of fame. Seeing how his parents have both been collegiate athletes, it wasn’t surprising when they noticed his excellence early on. Apparently, even though their son started competitively running at 8, he also took a liking to football and was briefly a running back/wide receiver.

After witnessing the prowess of this legend-in-the-making, to make sure he had all the help he needed, his parents started looking for a school that would help mold him. The family initially used to reside in Chesapeake, Virginia. But Roy and Monique decided to uproot themselves and shift their base to Potomac, Maryland, just so that the teen prodigy could have had a better shot in track and field. This was the time that denoted his enrolment in the Bullis School and the commencement of his training under Joe Lee.

The teenage phenom has since laid the foundation for being one of the best at his sport. Throughout this journey, the sprinter’s parents have always stood by his side. Following in the footsteps of his parents, the 16-year-old is busy paving his own path towards leaving a legacy to make the Wilson name proud. Now that he will be looking forward to putting on a rousing show at the Stade de France, do you think that Quincy Wilson’s preparation and hard work will finally come to fruition at the French Capital?
