Could another world record break in the Paris Olympics? While it is always a surreal sight to see records getting broken, it is even more fun to watch in anticipation. What makes it more interesting is when a world record holder is actually competing in an event. That is what’s happening in the women’s 400m hurdles where Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is looking to continue her record-breaking run during the US trials.

The interesting part is that this isn’t the first time Levrone is looking to break her own record. That’s right! The runner is a holder of multiple records and is perhaps the hottest favorite in the 400m hurdles this time. So what makes Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone so special? Well, the answer lies in the multiple records that she has set up over the years. 

Which world records has Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broken?

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has always been in a relationship with history. When she won the 400m gold in the Tokyo Olympics, nearly every comment mentioned that she had reached the pinnacle of the sport. At that point in time, it was the truth. But then, no one knew just how high Levrone’s ambitions were. She wanted to conquer the world and well she did.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is currently the fastest woman in the world in the 400m hurdles. And is the only athlete in history to break the world record 5 times in a single event. With a 50.65 seconds timing, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has the fastest time in 400m hurdles.

On top of that, her dreams haven’t ended yet. She wants to do something even more difficult. Per Forbes, Levrone now wants to break the 49-second barrier. That would certainly be a feat unseen by anyone before. But then again, Levrone is an expert in doing the unthinkable.

How close to another record is Sydney?

From 2021 to 2024, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke the record five times., she was the first to go below the 52-second mark in women’s 400m hurdles yet later she was also the first to go below the 51-second mark. So one could guess that her 49-second goal isn’t something that she can’t achieve. Even during his amateur days, Levrone was creating history.

She broke the world record of under-16 400m hurdles in 2016 with a 54.15-second timing. Then Levrone broke the under-20 world record too. Interestingly both of these records stand to this day and that explains the sheer domination that she has enjoyed in the sport. So Could she be looking to continue that streak and break another record in the Paris Olympics? That would certainly be a sight to see. 

Perhaps that’s why despite there being stiff competition, Levrone remains the overwhelming favorite in the event. Could her 49-second dream come true? Perhaps it could. After all, she has already broken two thresholds in the sport.
