Home/Olympics

The responsibilities of an athlete may often clash with those of family commitments. While being a star Olympian is crucial, so is the need to be there for one’s own. In the track and field world, women athletes are raised with doubts owing to their parental roles. Elite athletes, such as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Allyson Felix, have proven that being a mother need not be a career-ending decision. Yet, fans continue to draw conclusions based on outdated beliefs. Recently, an American long-distance runner challenged these stereotypes and showed the world that motherhood was never a limitation.

The track and field athlete competed in the annual 5th Avenue Mile road race held in New York on September 10. Notably, she had her six-month-old supporter among the spectators who looked happy in his father’s arms. Her remarkable performance at the race on Sunday makes one think, could motherhood be the source of an untapped strength?

Elle Purrier St. Pierre traveled from her home in Vermont to the Big Apple with her husband and newborn son, Ivan. She did not want to miss the 5th Avenue Mile this year, after her success with it in the past. The amazing athlete clocked 4:23.3 in the mile run, leaving everyone, including the media personnel, stunned. Chris Chavez, the founder of Citius Mag, broke the news to the track and field world on Twitter with a statement from her post-race interview where Elle Purrier St. Pierre said, “definitely ran for him & all the moms out there”.

Even when pregnant, the 28-year-old athlete did not skip the race and ran the course in 2022. In continuation with her impressive feats, this year she overcame her postpartum phase on time to keep her streak alive. While her husband, Jamie St. Pierre, and their six-month-old son cheered for the super mom from the stands, she clocked in a top ten timing. When asked, the athlete dedicated her success to all the mothers.

After the race, the press surrounded her, wanting to know what made her compete so soon after giving birth. Elle Purrier St. Pierre dedicated the moment to her son and all the other mothers who do not give themselves “enough credit” for the sake of their kids. Her grit and determination shone through in the response. Although she never put a full stop to her training during the pregnancy, now Elle Purrier St. Pierre is ready to make a comeback in full force.
