Sha’Carri Richardson and Shelly-An Fraser-Pryce were considered rivals a few years ago. It started during the 2021 Prefontaine Classic when Richardson finished a disappointing ninth while Fraser-Pryce came in second. Shortly after the race, the drama unfolded when the reigning women’s 100m world champion’s post-match interview was photo-bombed with a smirk by the Jamaican sprinter. Richardson later turned the smirk photo-bomb image of Fraser-Pryce into one of her social media profile pictures, as a way of reminding her of an embarrassing defeat.
Later on, the American sprinter even liked a post on X that compared the Jamaican sprinter to hip-hop star Lil Wayne. However, recently it was Richardson who was on the receiving end when Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce gave her thoughts on Richardson’s wig throw incident.

During the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships, Sha’Carri Richardson reached the women’s 100m finals. However, what caught everybody’s attention was the sprinter’s actions before the race. As the race was about to begin, the now-world champion removed her wig, threw it on the track, and eventually won the race by clocking a time of 10.82s. When she was asked about her strange wig throw incident, Richardson explained that she wanted to highlight to everybody that she was still the same girl, but better, stronger, and wiser.
She further said that the incident signified the shedding of her old version and presenting the new version. Soon after, a curious fan asked Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce about what she thought of the whole incident. According to a Yard Hype report, the Jamaican replied, “The only way I am removing a wig from my executive collection is if it flies mid stride and I am not planning on that happening ever!” This year, the two sprinters have not raced each other much but sparks flew when they finally faced off in Budapest recently.
When Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce fell short in Budapest
The 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest saw Sha’Carri Richardson square off against Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce after her wig-throw incident. As the women’s 100m lineup boasted of the likes of Shericka Jackson along with other sprinters, Richardson was not being considered by anybody to win. However, that all changed at the finish line when the American sprinter became the women’s 100m world champion in a new championship record time of 10.65 seconds. Shericka Jackson finished second with 10.72 seconds while Fraser-Pryce managed a bronze medal with 10.77 seconds.
While Fraser-Pryce was marred by injuries through 2023, Sha’Carri Richardson dominated the track. As the 2024 Paris Olympics edges closer, fans will be on the lookout for both these super-fast sprinters who will be going head to head for the ultimate track crown.
