The 2024 Olympics aren’t the only attraction for July. To make sure the sporting world, especially the track and field fraternity, gets into the mood for the big rumble, Netflix has announced a new documentary “Sprint“. Featuring the country’s top sprinting stars, including Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles, the docu-series will take a deep dive into what went behind the USA’s triumph at the last World Championships.

When the upcoming series was announced last month, not many details were revealed. However, the dates have finally come to the fore as to when Sprint will hit the streaming platform, and fans are understandably elated by what awaits them less than a month from now.

In a recent post on X by Citius Mag, the release date of the track and field documentary on Netflix has been announced. “‘Sprint’ – the @netflix documentary series from @BoxToBoxFilms following the top sprinters in the world – will drop on July 2nd.” reads the caption of the post. The six-episode documentary will see a Netflix team follow the country’s top sprinting stars in Hungary where the runners racked up a ton of honors at the World Championships.

The accompanying image shows Sha’Carri, Gabby Thomas, and Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson sharing a smile after their 200m sprint in Budapest last year, where they clinched the top three spots on the podium. With the Olympics just around the corner, Sprint could well be the one thing that kicks off the festivities in style.

Fans in teeters about the show

After the news dropped, fans took over social media to show their excitement to see what Netflix has in store. One fan seems to be even determined that the documentary will prompt them to finally start getting their eating habit in order considering how the discipline of the athletes will be a major focus of the show. “I’m eatinggg so good this year,” wrote a fan as the shared Citius Mag’s post.

Even Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit and husband of tennis icon Serena Williams, seems to be anticipating the release and had to paste an excited emoji to showcase his feelings.

Over the years, Netflix has produced several shows focused on different sports. While Formula 1: Drive to Survive was applauded for its portrayal of the world of F1 racing, Breaking Point was slammed as a series that couldn’t properly encapsulate the tenets of tennis perfectly. Taking a cue from that, Rohan Bell commented, “Hope this is better than what they did for tennis.

Joe also thinks that Netflix should do justice to the show, especially considering that there’s no dearth of talent who can become the focus of the documentary series in their own right. “the sport is in the hands of the netflix gods at this point,” reads the fan’s comment, underscoring how Netflix also has a bad rep in properly showcasing what goes on behind the scenes for athlete’s strive for greatness, while also hoping the higher powers don’t mess up this time.
