Is Sha'Carri Richardson's makeup-free look a game-changer for female athletes' image?

Sha’Carri Richardson’s quirky fashion game has almost become an integral part of her personality! Her braided hair, nail art, colored wigs, tattoos, and spunky tracksuits have blended in almost inseparably with her tack appearances. But before her all-important Paris Olympic stint, has she ditched the jazz? Well, we have all reasons to wonder, as she was recently seen pulling off a minimalist look!

After flaunting her six-inch nails painted in the colors of the USA flag at the picturesque opening ceremony of the Olympics, Richardson’s latest Instagram story appears to be in stark contrast. Ditching the color pop, she flaunts her natural black locks and a simple grey Nike t-shirt! Also, not to mention a printed headband. The boomerang clicked straight from the track and also featured a makeup-less look! Is this a hint that Richardson is currently single-minded in her focus?

Well, we can’t say Sha’Carri did not give the world a warning! Speaking to Elle magazine, she once mentioned, “My looks are always mixed up. You never know what you’re going to get when it comes to me.” And the world saw a glimpse of this at the Hayward Field trials, where she just pulled off bold lashes and a simple ponytail. “It was clean, fresh, and fast,” she acknowledged, indicating how her focus was competing. And that reciprocated in her basic look.

However, Richardson has been titled today’s Flo-Jo by Vogue for a reason! Her flamboyant fashion is something she has embraced over the years. In a recent collaboration with Sprite, she states that everything about ‘glam’ is her absolute favorite. “I enjoy getting my hair done… I enjoy getting my nails slayed.” In fact, her first-ever nail set featured a pink cheetah print! One that she got with her youngest aunt. And ever since, she has been hooked on this aesthetic.

How does Sha’Carri Richardson include fashion in her track life?

“Nails have always been my art, like they have always had my attention.” Much like the late Flo-Jo, Richardson has pulled off bold nail art; she does wear her love for them on her sleeve! And a lot of it has to do with her upbringing. She confesses how her grandmother, aunt, and mother all kept their nails well-manicured, something she picked up quite early.

Also, as part of her Nike deal, Richardson has also endorsed street fashion as part of the Nike Women Fashion Week. But she can also pull off the natural game equally brilliantly. In 2023, she bid adieu to her wigs and mentioned, “I want to show you guys, that I am still that girl, but I am better… So I had to shed old and present new.”
