Jasmine Camacho-Quinn's humble request to Alexis Ohanian—Is this the kind of sportsmanship we need more of?

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn had the track and field world buzzing as she stormed back to form, snatching victory in the 100m hurdles at Alexis Ohanian’s Athlos NYC. With a swift 12.36 seconds, she edged out Alaysha Johnson, who crossed the line at 12.43 seconds, and Olympic champion Masai Russell, who clocked in at 12.44 seconds for third place. That win?

It earned Jasmine a cool $60,000! But she didn’t just take home the cash. In her post-race interview, the Paris Olympics bronze medalist had a little suggestion for the big names behind the event—Alexis Ohanian and Serena Williams. Jasmine floated the idea of moving Athlos across the pond.

“The fact that we’re in the States and this is what we have, like I said, only women. This is 36 of us competing; like, this is amazing. Honestly, if this were to, you know, continue and it did move to Europe, it could mean something great. Honestly, it could.”

Seems like Ohanian might be on board too. Before the event kicked off, he confirmed to LetsRun.com that Athlos will be back in 2025 and teased about giving it a strong ‘New Yorker’ vibe this time around. “We’re absolutely doing this again next year,” Ohanian said.

Alexis Ohanian said that he wanted to give Athlos an energy similar to famous New York sporting events like the US Open or a NBA playoff match involving the New York Knicks. He said, “We have such a dynamic city, and I love I’m from Fort Green, so I’m biased, but if you can pull off an event here in New York that New Yorkers say is one of the best events they’ve been to in sports and culture, you’re doing something right.”

So, if Athlos were to take Jasmine Camacho-Quinn’s advice and head to Europe in 2025, they could totally shape the event around whichever city they choose, adding an Olympic-like vibe to the whole spectacle. Imagine the energy of Paris, London, or Berlin—each city could bring its own flavor to the mix!

Thus, it was an evening filled with great performances from the athletes, along with the Megan Thee Stallion performance. Many people on social media praised the whole arrangement. One social media user said that the event was much more fun than the Diamond League. “The commentators were very positive.” This sentiment was echoed by Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles too, who said,I love these introductions at @athlos. I want to hear even more energy when announcing these Women!!! Forget trying to sound professional. Let’s get loud and extra!”

Despite being defeated at the event, Gabby Thomas also took to social media to praise the whole thing. She said, “Every track meet needs to be like @athlos. End of discussion.” Thus, it seems like Alexis Ohanian’s dream to build an event only for female athletes not only came to fruition but also became loved by all.

On September 28th, Alexis Ohanian put out a post on X responding to Jasmine Camacho-Quinn’s statement, expressing interest in scheduling the next meet in Europe. He said, OK  @JCamachoQuinn— I’m intrigued, what European cities do you think are most ready for ATHLOS? … or… what about ATHLOS San Juan, PR??”

San Juan is where Jasmine belongs from. Along with Europe, Alexis is also showing a willingness to host the next meet in her hometown. This adds a lot of intrigue as speculations will now begin on the new location of Athlos. Whatever happens, hopefully, next year’s event will be even bigger!
