"Almost losing her shot at double gold, did the rules target Sha'Carri Richardson unfairly?"

On Saturday Sha’Carri Richardson reached her season-best timing in the 200m event in the ongoing US Olympic trials. The ever-shining 21.92 seconds touched her best performance in the event and reached the final round of the event. However, a sword of disqualification was hanging over her head because of the lane infringement rule.

As per the revised guidelines, a sprinter can touch the lane line or kerb a maximum of one time during all rounds in an ongoing event without facing disqualification. But if he/she repeats the deed in the subsequent round, the harsh punishment of disqualification will come down.

Registering the penalty for touching the line for one time will attract a yellow card notice from the concerned athlete. For the same reason, Sha’Carri Richardson had to see a yellow mark alongside her semifinal result from yesterday in the published leaderboard. Before the final 200m event, this could have been one of the defining factors for SCR to continue with the double gold medal dream from the Paris Olympics.

The new rule has come into existence since November 1, 2021, as the World Athletics found the need to impose some new factors. Previously, any athlete could face disqualification for stepping only one time on the kerb or lane line. But in March 2018, 21 cases of disqualifications came to light because of the stringent rule. Furthermore, the disqualifications occurred on a big stage, like the World Athletics Indoor Championship. Therefore, a few laces needed to be loosened. Subsequently, the global body initiated the discussion.

The newly imposed rule has come out from that reform process. Now, the usage of the yellow card or a chance to rectify the error has minimized such cases. Still, the rule was enough to take Sha’Carri Richardson into the grab. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old athlete did not flaunt any expression of worry because of the warning she had received. That seemed to be fair ahead of the stacked final event of 200m in the women’s category on Saturday. The final would be a chance for Sha’Carri to prove many things, especially after her double defeats in the Diamond League.

Sha’Carri Richardson may need to keep many things in her mind

Now when Sha’Carri Richardson is just inches away from making her double qualification for the Paris Olympics, would she think about all those criticisms hurled toward her after facing back-to-back defeats in the season-opening games? Unlike other athletes, SCR chose the 200m over her trademark 100m event as her debut this season. However, the story did not pan out with a nice ending for the World Athletics Championships’ bronze medalist.

She was nowhere close to her previous seasons’ timings in the 200m or her known rhythm. Still, she promised to fight back. In the Prefontaine Classic, Sha’Carri came out all guns blazing in the 100m event. That form continued to the US Olympic track and field trials as well.

Notably, in the 100m trial final, Sha’Carri made her presence felt by posing the topper and achieving the world-lead timing. In the 200m heats and semi-final as well, she continued the similar flare. But now, in the final, Sha’Carri Richardson will need to think about multiple things- a reply to all those criticisms and a possible rule violation.
