Among the hopefuls for the Paris Olympics, stands a 31-year-old athlete hailing from Mundelein, whose journey extends far beyond her hometown. It was in Nixa, Missouri, where Courtney Frerichs discovered her athletic prowess, dedicating herself to refining her skills and nurturing her passion for sports. Fun fact – she was a former child prodigy in gymnast and soccer before veering her sporting sensibilities to steeplechase glory.

However, it wasn’t until her senior year of high school that she found her love for–steeplechase. This newfound passion propelled her to the road to Paris in 2024. There’s so much love for us to keep doing to get ready for this summer,” she shared, encapsulating the dedication and fervor that drives her preparation for the upcoming challenge.

Frerichs, a two-time Olympian, embodies the pursuit of perfection. From the age of seven, she was fueled by an unrelenting, competitive spirit. I was always an incredibly competitive child. I think it came really at 8, and so it was like, ‘OK, well, what’s the absolute highest I can get to, and I’m gonna get there, she said. She had decided to go to the Olympics. but it wasn’t that easy.

Originally drawn to gymnastics in her formative years, Frerichs believed, “I thought I knew everything I wanted.” However, fate had other plans, redirecting her towards soccer after battling injuries at 17. It was a serendipitous encounter with the steeplechase. It was a track event that melded her gymnastic prowess with her distance running talent that ignited her Olympic aspirations.

Through determination, she carved her niche in the 3000 meters, clinching a spot at the Rio Games in 2016. Despite finishing 11th, the experience imbued her with newfound confidence and altered her perception of what she could achieve.

Resilience on the Road to Paris 2024

Amidst the daunting backdrop of the pandemic, Tokyo beckoned as Courtney Frerichs embraced the challenge with unwavering resolve. With grit and determination, she hurdled through the obstacles, fueled by a steadfast commitment to seize the moment.
