This year’s Kip Keino Classic was probably the most controversial one yet. The controversy mostly surrounded one athlete in particular, Sha’Carri Richardson. The track and field star set the tone at the beginning of this season, by finishing the 100m race at Doha Diamond League in a record-setting 10.76 seconds, Richardson achieved the fastest 100-meter time in the world so far this year.
However, after Doha Diamond League, things went a little south for Sha’Carri Richardson. Clearly, 100m is her forte. However, Richardson was not happy about the fact that she was not invited to run the 100m, but instead, was put in the 200m category both in Botswana and in Nairobi.

Finally, Richardson ran in the 200m category at the 2023 Kip Keino Classic, and she absolutely dominated the tracks. The 23-year-old was ahead of all her competitors from the beginning, not by a little, but by a lot. She had her eye on the prize, and she was not going to let it go. Richardson won the race. According to Runner’s World, she did that with a record-setting time of 22.07 seconds, leaving everyone behind, including fellow Americans Kyra Jefferson and Shannon Ray. However, something else transpired on the tracks that day.
Sha’Carri Richardson, instead of cruising through the finish line, decreased her speed when she was 40 meters short of it, and it seemed like she was having an early celebration for the win that was yet to come. Soon after that, she immediately floated across the line, leaving everyone in the dust. The audience roared as she walked around the field, clearly pumped and emotional. Through her win, Richardson shut down all the naysayers, and she shut them down well. Sha’Carri also posted a small clip of her celebrating before the finish line on her Instagram account.
The clip was a close-up where she was seen hyping herself up, her emotions on her face for everyone to witness. Along with the video, she posted a photo with the text, “The real flex is letting some people talk sh*t about the old you while you heal and evolve into the new you.” Richardson could be talking about any number of controversies surrounding her, like her ban from the Olympics for THC. However, what recently takes the cake is the fiasco she had to face because of the Kip Keino organizing committee.

When Richardson entered the Kip Keino Classic, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce revealed that she was going to start her season by running in the Kip Keino Classic, the fans went into a frenzy, expecting a face-off between the two stars. However, the organizers disappointed everyone, including Richardson, after they revealed that Fraser-Pryce was going to run in the 100m category, and Richardson in the 200m. An injury that occurred during training meant that Shelly-Ann had to withdraw from the meet.
This allegedly put the organizers in a tailspin, as they now lacked a headliner for the category. Sha’Carri Richardson had made no secret of her displeasure with being inducted into the 200m race, and she clearly spoke her thoughts in an Instagram video. After Fraser-Pryce backed out, Athletics Kenya apparently requested Richardson to jump over to the 100m category, however, this has been denied by the athlete. Sha’Carri Richardson’s frustration does not stem out of a vacuum, as she was forced to run in the 200m at Botswana as well, where she lost the race.

However, she redeemed herself at the Kip Keino Classic. She refused to run in the 100m category, choosing to concentrate on the 200m category instead. And she won by a landslide. Her win is the perfect slap on the face of all the people who have doubted that Richardson would not make it.
