All isn’t lost for Quincy Wilson. The 16-year-old was announced as a member of the men’s 4x400m team a couple of days ago and now stands on the verge of becoming the youngest-ever track star from the USA to win a gold medal in Paris. While this isn’t exactly an easy feat to achieve, fans have been quick to point out that he needn’t fret, as there seems to be something in the air about where he comes from that breeds champions.
The flagbearers of the US at the 2024 Olympics will come from all corners of the country, but it seems like Maryland is turning out as one of the biggest suppliers of this year’s Olympians. As more and more athletes from the state are being announced as members of Team USA, fans can’t help but note their bewilderment about what Maryland and one of its counties bring to the table.

A recent post by 301 News on Instagram shows how Maryland will be extensively represented at the Paris Olympics. Focusing mostly on Prince George’s County, the caption of the post reads, “PG County Deep in Paris, Maryland the face of America In Paris,“. It seems that Wilson hails from the same surroundings that have given rise to national stars like NBA icon Kevin Durant, and as many fans point out, seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky.

At the US Olympic Team Trials last month, Wilson startled fans with his prowess. Breaking the U18 record at his will, Quincy has been one of the main stars to gain widespread attention. And yet, his omission from Team USA was a surprise that not everyone was on board with. Now with his shot at his maiden Olympic glory assured, the track community has taken the opportunity to speculate how the county and the state help athletes to morph into national icons.

Naturally, the community seems to think there must be something about the county in Maryland that helps athletes attain greatness. “Something must be in the water,” commented Madcity Sports, a fan-run IG account, and we aren’t entirely sure to brush the thought aside as hokum.

Quincy will be joined by fellow PG County athletes such as track star Juliette Whittaker and gymnast Khoi Young on their quest to bring home hardware from the French capital. Spearheaded by Durant and Ledecky, the Maryland contingent is guaranteed to haul at least a few podium finishes at the 2024 Olympics, and one fan is convinced that the PGC is heaven for anyone who won’t settle for anything less than stardom in the USA’s sports scene. “PGGGGGGGG!!! LET’S GOOOOO!! Nobody makes athletes like PG!” commented kidcuuz, and we’re inclined to agree.
National title holder Masai Russell, 2021 World Championships featherweight gold medalist Jahmal Harvey, and 400m sprinter Isabella Whittaker also hail from PGC and will be shouldering major responsibilities for the national team at the 2024 Paris Games. Naturally, the stakes are high for the small county in Maryland.
“MD just diff,” wrote Jorden, and it just might be about right, considering the emphatic squad of Olympians who call Maryland home. “This is so dope!!!!!” acknowledges another fan.

There are several stars named in the post who have a high probability of subduing their opponents on the great stage. With names like Aaron Brooks and Helen Maroulis on the list, folks from Maryland might not think it to be too far-fetched to start planning for something to celebrate once the Olympics conclude. Rightfully, Kellz also reflected the sentiment as they commented, “Everybody takes home a gold.”
