As high school came to a close, Nick Mayhugh was set to play soccer at Radford University on a scholarship. His world was shaken when he stumbled upon an Instagram ad for the seven-a-side soccer national team, which opened the door to new global adventures. However, when the sport was unexpectedly removed from the Tokyo Paralympics roster, fate took a turn. A U.S. coach reached out with an intriguing question: How would he feel about stepping onto the track instead?

It all came down to the Tokyo Paralympics 2024. After clinching three gold medals and setting two world records there, Nick Mayhugh faced a challenging period marked by injuries and sponsor rejections. Struggling to find his way, he reached out to Olympic star Noah Lyles for help, asking if he could join Lyles’s elite training camp in Clermont, Florida. Lyles connected Mayhugh with renowned coach Lance Brauman, who decided to take a chance on him. This pivotal move reignited Mayhugh’s passion and set him on a path to the Paris Paralympics, where he’ll compete in the 100-meter dash and long jump, rejuvenated by the support of Lyles, his family, and therapy.

Following his stunning success at the Tokyo Paralympics, Nick Mayhugh was thrilled to receive a congratulatory call from his idol, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. Known for his unparalleled dominance on the track, Bolt’s call was a monumental affirmation for Mayhugh. As his father, Scott, reflected, the weight of such a high achievement felt almost overwhelming. “He came home from the Paralympics, and he had no idea of direction, no idea what he was going to do,” Scott shared.

“No gold medal is going to make you happy. No world record is going to make you happy,”  Nick Mayhugh admitted, reflecting on the emptiness he felt despite his monumental achievements. He found himself grappling with a profound sense of dissatisfaction, realizing that even the pinnacle of athletic success couldn’t fill the void he felt. In a moment of self-reflection, Nick recognized that his struggles extended beyond the track and that true happiness required more than just accolades. It was a hard lesson in humility, forcing him to confront his inner turmoil and acknowledge that seeking help was essential for his well-being.
