In his relentless pursuit of excellence, Noah Lyles, the US sprint star and reigning 200m world champion, is driven by a singular goal: to become “the best next version” of himself. As the countdown to the 2024 Paris Olympics accelerates, all eyes are on Lyles, whose aspirations for quadruple gold shine brightly. Dominating his American peers across multiple categories, Lyles stands as a formidable force on the track. However, amidst his quest for Olympic glory, a new challenge emerges from Jamaica’s sprinting elite.

In recent Jamaican trials, two of their 100m champions have matched Lyles’ personal best, intensifying the competitive landscape. This unexpected scrutiny follows Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson’s surge to a world-leading performance, sparking debate and speculation among athletes worldwide as they fine-tune their preparations for the Paris Olympics.

In a recent tweet, Noah Lyles praised the track and field athletes running in the Jamaican Olympics trials. He wrote, “Shout out to them boys running out there in Jamaica! y’all are really helping to make this a great Olympic championship.” It was a rare moment from the fastest man of 2023, who is otherwise known for his braggadocio and his tall claims of beating Usain Bolt’s Olympic records.

But his reaction is not unwarranted, as Jamaican athletes have been metaphorically putting their best foot forward. Especially Kishane Thompson, who posted a world-leading time of 9.77s at the 100m event, which confirmed his spot on the Jamaican Olympic team. He will consequently do his best to bring the gold medal back to Jamaica since Bolt in 2017. My coach instructed me just to run the first 60 meters, nothing more, after that, shut it down, Thompson told Reuters.

He continued by saying,If I came second or third, I would’ve made the team. The goal wasn’t to prove anything tonight, just run the 70 or 60 meters and see where I was.Whatever his intention, it was still the fastest time in the world recorded in the past two years. Oblique Seville closely followed Thompson, surpassing Noah Lyles’ time at the Jamaica Invitational. Seville finished with a time of 9.82s and Ackeem Blake came third with 9.92s.

Seville and Thompson both surpassed Noah Lyles’ personal best of 9.83 seconds. Lyles matched this time at the recent USA track and field team trials. This has led to questions among the track and field community about Lyles’ chances in Paris. Noah himself is a favorite to qualify in the 200m after already securing his spot for the 100m category.

In the 200m heats he won with a time of 20.10s and currently holds the American record for the event at 19.31s. He was part of the 2023 World Championship team that won gold in the 400m relay. He is set to make a comeback in that event for Paris as well. Now that Lyles and Thompson have both punched their ticket and are going to face off, the Olympics’ anticipation just ricocheted up.

Jamaican track fans set sights on Lyles after Thompson’s record-breaking feat

Jamaican track and field fans are gleefully discussing Noah Lyles’ tweet (pun intended). Speculations are that Lyles is just as concerned as we are about the impressive performance of Jamaican athletes. One fan pulled Lyles’ leg by tweeting a screenshot of the time in Eugene, Oregon where the USA trials are being held and where Noah is currently at. The time was 12.22 am which is a significantly late hour for an athlete to stay up till. The fan wrote speculating about Lyles’ apprehension, Bro is up past midnight having nightmares about the Jamaicans..

One fan seemed to be quite straightforward after seeing the Jamaican runners’ preparation and how their performances are world-leading. They wrote about how this will affect Lyles’ gold chances, saying, They coming for your neck bro.

Another Jamaican track and field fan added their perspective, pointing out Noah Lyles’ apprehension in facing formidable competition from their nation. The next fan mirrored this sentiment. Pointing out how Kishane’s Thompson’s trial performances have consistently been faster than Lyles’ personal best. Thompson clocked in at 9.82 in the opening round of the Jamaican trials. Which was still faster than Lyles. The fan summarized this writing, You’re shook bro. Kishane jogged your PB and then ran 9.7. #ScaryHours”.

It seems that Oblique Seville’s win over Noah Lyles in the Invitational was just the beginning. The Jamaicans will do their best to bring back all the medals that Bolt had won for them in the past. Now it’s up to Noah Lyles to make good on his promises.
