The US Olympic dream in middle-distance running faces significant challenges. Months ago, their legendary runner Emma Coburn suffered a season-ending injury while trying to perfect her water jump technique, resulting in a broken ankle. This devastating setback means that America will be without Coburn’s services at the Paris Olympics. Unfortunately, the nightmare did not end there. Recent updates reveal another athlete has been added to the injury list, compounding the team’s woes.
Shockingly, it is now Courtney Frerichs who is down with a torn ACL. The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist conveyed the message in a long post via her social media. While the fans are heartbroken to learn about Frerichs’ injury, Emma Coburn came forward and extended her sympathetic self to the mental aid of Frerichs.

Frerichs shared a long and emotional message with her fans on Instagram. She explained that she sustained the injury last month when her knee got overextended while performing a water jump, similar to Coburn’s situation. According to the update, the 31-year-old not only tore her ACL but also suffered significant tears in both the medial and lateral menisci, along with several other injuries.

Summing up how fate can play a big part in one’s plans, Frerichs reflected, “Sometimes this sport will just break your heart over and over again Wednesday I had surgery to reconstruct my ACL and repair a torn meniscus in my right knee… As runners we tend to view things systematically, but truth is this was a freak accident that comes with the inherent risk of being a steeplechaser combined with my hyper-mobile body.” The middle-distance runner also expressed her disappointment to be missing the entire season, and especially, the Olympics.
Meanwhile, as Frerichs nurses her injury, fellow runner Emma Coburn comes to her aid. Having suffered an identical fate, Coburn understood the situation the best among everyone. Commenting on her post, Coburn wrote, “You’re so strong, Courtney. Heal well, sending you the biggest hug 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍 Can’t wait to see you on the other side of this…healthy and better than ever 💪💪” As a matter of fact, this is not the first instance of Frerichs getting bothered by an injury.

While Frerichs’ career looks sublime, her list of injuries is not so impressive. What turned out to be a sad state of affairs, Frerichs had to withdraw her name from the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in 2023. Suffering from an ankle injury, this was the first time Frerichs had to pull out from a major event since 2015.
Now, with Coburn and Frerichs out of action, the opportunities are wide open for the others. A total of three places are up for grabs. According to the consensus, the most promising ones expected to make the cuts are Val Constien, Courtney Wayment, and Krissy Gear. However, nothing is certain about sports. And it will be interesting to see who wins the Olympic tickets come June 21.
