Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone vs. Gabby Thomas: Who's the real queen of American track and field?

After setting new benchmarks and making history in Paris, Gabby Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone are set for lucrative financial incentives. From World Athletics to national authorities, the athletes are in line to get richer for their golden feat at the tournament. While Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will earn a hefty amount, Alexis Ohanian’s promise to Gabby Thomas means she will edge her teammate here.

Thomas ended up with three gold medals to make history while McLaughlin-Levrone had two to her name along with a world record. As they bask in the glory of etching their name in Olympic history, their coffers will be filling up as well.

Both athletes will be among those set to benefit from the monetary rewards after finishing at the top of the podium. Bonuses from World Athletics for winning gold, making a new record plus the same from USATF will add to their purse. On top of this, former NFL players also announced financial rewards to the Olympic Champions.

A pretty hefty amount, right? However, Harvard graduate Thomas isn’t far behind either. Paris Olympics proved to be a dream run for the 27-year-old. She won the 200m race finishing with a time of 21.83 and also helped the USA clinch gold in the 4x400m relay as well as the 4x100m relay. Her haul of three golds meant she joined an exclusive list of US female sprinters who won three gold medals in a single edition of the Olympics.

Gabby Thomas now sees her name alongside, Wilma Rudolph (1960 Rome), Florence Griffith-Joyner aka (1988 Seoul Olympics), and Gail Devers (1996 Atlanta Olympics).

While it’s clear that McLaughlin-Levrone’s purse is heftier than her colleague’s, one crucial factor tips the scales in favor of Thomas in the final calculations.

Reddit co-founder and tennis legend Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, is set to contribute $180,000 to Gabby for her three gold-medal performances, fulfilling his promise of awarding prize money of $60,000 to Paris Olympic gold medalists who will compete in his upcoming Athlos NYC tournament.

On August 8 after Gabby Thomas’ win, Ohanian reshared the tweet from six days earlier where he made the promise and wrote, “And I owe her $60K for that Gold Medal Bounty.” Given that Gabby won three of those in Paris, her total earnings soar to over $386,000.

In April this year, Ohanian announced his 776 Invitational featuring exclusively female sprinters. The announcement came with a historic step as well. Ohanian revealed that each gold medal winner at the event will win a lucrative sum of $60,000. The second place will earn $25,000, the third $10,000, the fourth $8,000, the fifth $5,000, and the sixth $2,500.

Moreover, he also mentioned that he will distribute 10% of the event’s revenue among all competitors. The event has been renamed Athlos and will be held at the Icahn Stadium, New York City on September 26. The prize money is also significant considering the low

The World Athletics had promised to pay gold medalists in Paris a sum of $50,000 for the first time in Olympic history, with relay winners splitting the award equally between competitors. Moreover, new world records are also entitled to an additional $100,000 from the international track and field governing body.

The USATF also announced a prize of $37,500 to American athletes who win gold at the Olympic Games this year. Former NFL stars Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson also revealed before the start of the Games that they would each pay $25,000 to gold medalists in the tournament, plus an extra $50,000 for setting new world records.

Both Thomas and McLaughlin-Levrone bagged multiple gold medals in Paris. With that, they’ll also be making a ton of money thanks to the rewards that we mentioned.

However, while these amounts reflect the athletes’ incredible achievements, they still have much to look forward to now that the quadrennial event is over.

Big responsibilities loom overhead for both stars

Ohanian’s commitment to Gabby for the prize money doesn’t surprise ardent track fans. The venture capitalist announced the neurobiology student as one of the first stars of his ambitious Athlos NYC project. The September tournament promises to be a revolutionary event aimed at uplifting athletics, particularly for women.

Along with Gabby, Olympic silver medalist and reigning women’s 100m world champ Sha’Carri Richardson is also expected to compete in Ohanian’s tournament. Meanwhile, McLaughlin-Levrone has her hands full as well.

Sydney will be one main selling points for Olympic veteran Michael Johnson’s upcoming track event Grand Slam Track, expected to take flight from early next year. The tournament will be a fan-focused one, notes Johnson, who has also announced McLaughlin-Levrone as the brand ambassador for the same.

Sydney got it right away and I knew that she would. She’s one of those athletes that likes to race on the big stage. She loves it … So, when I presented this to her—telling her she would get that same sort of vibe, audience and grand scale four times a year—she was all about it,” Sportico quotes Johnson on why he decided to work with the four-time Olympic gold medalist.

For track and field fans and aspiring athletes, it will be heartening to see Gabby Thomas, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and others get rewarded handsomely for their success in the Olympics. Although the title of being an Olympic Champion is rewarding enough, the addition of financial gains is the cherry on the top.
