Recently a story was posted by @outside_run on Instagram, reposting it on her story, sprinter Gabby Thomas is seen addressing audiences at a camp Strava event. She said, “If I were to focus only on chasing medals, chasing, times, chasing these figures that are somewhat out of my control, I’m not sure I would be here right now.” This is a nod to the rising tensions amongst track and field athletes who are gearing up to face each other at the Paris Olympics. Many sprinters including Noah Lyles, Christian Coleman and Fred Kerley have expressed their desire to beat Usain Bolt’s 100m world record of 9.58 seconds.

However, Gabby Thomas is keeping herself out of the controversy. She has often spoken about how having fun is important while training. In April, Christian Coleman said, “9.58 is obviously an extraordinary time but honestly I feel like it’s a lot of guys who are competing today who are not that far off.” But this claim fell flat as Coleman was nowhere near that time. Even Noah Lyles finished in 10s. They were taunted as “slow.” However Fred Kerley joined in on X saying, World record next time I touch the 100m”. This persistent insistence from young sprinters challenging Usain Bolt’s records has also been viewed as somewhat disrespectful. This is because they have not even been able to overtake Yohan’s 9.69 seconds. Additionally, the Diamond League broadcast has shifted from NBC to FloTrack with increased subscription fees. FloTrack has consistently published inflammatory news to spark various debates. Even Gabby Thomas called it the worst news ever. It doesn’t seem like the tension will die down any time soon.

In sports, ego plays a significant factor. Sprinters like Gabby Thomas and Shericka Johnson will either need to confront this challenge directly or risk being undermined by their peers. Previously Gabby Thomas has made it clear that focus is important to win, stating, You can’t even be a little bit off because a centimeter is the difference between a gold and silver medal. However, the rising controversy in T&F is sure to affect the mental state of sprinters by making them more conscious about time and less about winning. However, Gabby Thomas is clear in her goal; that is to prove herself and the world what she is capable of.
