The 2023 Asian Games are in their last leg of completion. Like all premier competitions, the Asian Games are also handing out monetary benefits and one particular athlete is securing the bag and no, it’s not Sha’Carri Richardson. Like a host of track and field athletes, Kenyan-born Bahraini Winfred Mutile Yavi has also put in some great performances at the premier competition. Yavi, who specializes in the women’s 1500m and 3000m steeplechase, came into the 2023 Asian Games on the back of some epic performances. Only recently, the track and field star won a 3000m steeplechase gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest by running 8:54.29.
She followed this with a Diamond League gold medal when she set the 2nd fastest time in women’s 3000m steeplechase history with her 8:50.66 at Hayward Field, Eugene. Now, with her multiple wins at the 2023 Asian Games, the Kenyan-born Bahraini track and field star has not only won medals but also boosted her bank balance.

The 2023 Asian Games are not only rewarding athletes and coaches with medals but are also awarding monetary rewards for excellence. Gold medalists are being awarded $5000 while silver medalists are set to receive $3000, with $2000 being handed out to bronze medalists. Winfred Mutile Yavi has already won two gold medals in two days after spectacular performances at the women’s 1500m and 3000m steeplechase. This saw her winning $10,000 at Hangzhou, but according to a Track Spice X post, the track and field star has won over 1.4 million Kenyan Shilling.

Yavi secured her first gold medal in the women’s 1500m with a time of 4:11.65 after which she clinched another gold in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:18.28. Her 3000m steeplechase time also shattered the previous Asian Games record set by Ruth Jebet, who achieved the feat in 2014 with a time of 9:31.36. However, when it comes to tournament winnings, the 2023 Asian Games was not the only heavy-earning competition for Winfred Mutile Yavi, who had majorly boosted her bank balance this season.
Track and field star’s financially rewarding 2023 season
Winfred Mutile Yavi’s impressive 2023 season saw her making some serious bank. Her 2023 World Athletics Championships’ 3000m steeplechase gold medal meant that the Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete secured $70,000 (10.3 million Kenyan Shillings). Similarly, by winning three Diamond League races this season, the track and field star earned another $30,000 (4.4 million Kenyan Shillings). With an impressive 2023 season, Yavi now believes that she can slowly move on to competing in even longer distances like the 5000m and 10,000m disciplines.
