The 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow kicked off with thrilling showdowns across all disciplines of track and field. While American athletes like Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Nikki Hiltz, and Ryan Crouser had a strong start, it was a challenging day for Irish women.
Long-distance runner Sarah Healy experienced a heartbreaking fall just shy of the finish line in the 1500m heats, while Irish athlete Sharlene Mawdsley faced disqualification after initially making it to the 400m final. As scrutiny intensified over Mawdsley’s disqualification, track and field enthusiasts took to social media to express their discontent, with many labeling the decision as unfair.

A post by Cathal Dennehy on X compared two videos to scrutinize the fairness of Sharlene Mawdsley’s disqualification, captioning it, “The lack of consistency is a real issue.” The first video depicted the men’s 800-meter race at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships, showing the final stretch where Boris Berian led the pack.
After Sharlene Mawdsley's DQ, watched some other world indoor races to see examples of obstruction.
It took a whole two races to find this – the 2016 men's 800m final.
Watch the battle for silver. No DQ. Then watch last night's race.

As Antoine Gakeme and Musaeb Abdulrahman Balla attempted to catch up, Balla stumbled a bit, impeding Gakeme’s progress. Berian secured the win, with Antoine Gakeme taking silver and Erik Sowinski seizing bronze by overtaking Balla strategically after his stumble behind Gakeme. In contrast, the video of Mawdsley in the 2024 World Indoor Championships highlighted her qualifying third in the 400m semi-final with a time of 52.16 seconds.
However, a maneuver where Mawdsley passed Susanne Gogl-Walli led to a disqualification after a complaint from the Austrian team. Unlike the men’s race, Mawdsley’s overtake was from the side rather than obstructive. Despite an unsuccessful appeal from the Irish team, Mawdsley missed the final despite qualifying, sparking outrage among track and field fans who deemed her disqualification unjust.

Track and field fans express their outrage over the disqualification
Track and field enthusiasts flooded the comment section, vehemently calling out the unfair decision of Sharlene Mawdsley’s disqualification, especially in light of Antoine Gakeme’s non-disqualification at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championship. One frustrated fan articulated concerns about the inconsistency in officiating standards.
The lack of consistency in decision making is in all sports sadly.
Gutted for Sharlene, she was flying and wouldn't have been caught.— Keith Ruth (@runnerruthy) March 2, 2024
Another commenter expressed shock at the decision.
Absolute nonsense of a decision. Barely touches her. The Austrians should be mortified.

Yet another track and field fan highlighted the lack of consistency in decision-making across sports.
If they disqualify every athlete for even minor contact, it would make a mockery of indoor athletics and many outdoor races too. But if they DQ athletes in some instances and not in other instances, it will alienate a lot of spectators.

One fan even called out the Australian team for filing the complaint.
What a joke … shame on Austria for objecting… take your beating
— adrian tully (@adrianctully) March 2, 2024
Expressing outrage, another commentator felt that Sharlene had been unfairly deprived.
To me a minor trip like those is much less significant 100-150 vs 10-30m from finish (like Sarah!). The influence of this decision on loss of funding for Sharlene will likely be massive (sport Ireland and sponsor), which in this frugal sport is gutting!! 😓

Meanwhile, another individual shared how minor incidents, shouldn’t carry as heavy a consequence.
Very harsh
