The world of sports is often a stage where controversies and outrages unfold, drawing both admiration and criticism from fans. Recently, World Champion Noah Lyles experienced a surprising defeat at the hands of Jamaican sprinter Oblique Seville, by a narrow margin of just 0.03 seconds. This incident bears an uncanny resemblance to the behavior exhibited by Sha’Carri Richardson after her loss at the Prefontaine Classic in 2021. Richardson, known for her outspoken nature, had stirred controversy with her reactions following the defeat. Noah Lyles’ reaction has track and field fans comparing it to Richardson’s past, analyzing how athletes handle setbacks.

Recently, as reported by the Jamaican Observer on his X handle, Noah Lyles expressed anger and disappointment after finishing second to Oblique Seville in the Racers 2024 Grand Prix. Noah said,I say it every year, when I get beat, y’all better be scared as shit, because next time you see me, you gone be ____ worried! According to the Jamaican Observer’s caption, Noah Lyles is already focusing on dominating his next race.

The caption stated, After running his second fastest 100m ever in 9.85s to finish 2nd after Jamaica’s Oblique Seville (9.82s PB), @nojo18 says he is perfectly fine with his time, but expressed concern that the gun went off too early. Lyles’ time is the fastest by an American this year. Noah Lyles’ interview drew attention to parallels with Sha’Carri Richardson’s outburst after the 2021 Prefontaine Classics.

Both sprinters expressed their disappointment and frustration with evident anger. Richardson’s return from disqualification at the Tokyo 2020 Games saw her finishing last in the Prefontaine 2021 Classics, contrasting sharply with Elaine Thompson-Herah’s victory. During that time, Richardson said, I’m not upset with myself at all. This is one race. I’m not done. You know what I’m capable of. Count me out if you want to. Talk all the s* you want because I’m here to stay.

Similarly, with Noah, he is here to stay, despite this hiccup. During the 2024 Racers Grand Prix, Oblique Seville pulled a fantastic finish over reigning world champion Noah Lyles in the men’s 100m. Seville clocked in at 9.82 seconds to Lyles’ 9.85 seconds. Lyles’ loss came after he had been having a great season since being crowned Fastest Man Alive in the 2023 World Championships.

However, he was unable to match up to Seville that day. Even Seville was taken aback by his victory and said, “I‘m a little surprised. It’s special to be able to run so fast without too much specific work. It shows that I can still do better. Running in front of the immense crowd, Lyles came up just short of a gold. However, he still has his Olympic dream of winning quadruple medals alive.

Sprinting fans were displeased with Lyles’ post-race interview

Noah Lyles’ explosive reactions has taken aback the track and field community following his loss to Oblique Seville. Noah’s less-than-ideal response to the situation has sparked debate and discussion among fans and analysts alike. One fan AJT retweeted the post by Jamaican Observer and poked fun at Noah Lyles’ demeanor during the interview after the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston, Jamaica, saying, This interview has such girl Prefontaine 2021 energy 😭😭”. Replying to this comment, someone said, “The girl that dethroned all of your favorites.

In response to the above fan comment, another fan highlighted how Oblique Seville’s previous fourth-place finishes may have fueled his determination to perform exceptionally well in the 2024 Racers Grand Prix. Fan implied that these past setbacks could have acted as a catalyst, motivating Seville to strive for victory and leave no room for doubt in his performance. She stated, Oblique is out for blood after those 4th places”.

Another fan took issue with AJT’s comparison of Noah Lyles’ reaction to Sha’Carri Richardson’s behavior, considering it sexist. The fan disagreed with the implication that Lyles might be “behaving like a girl,” expressing their displeasure with the comment by stating, yours quite a bit sexist. Hmmm.”

A fan criticized the unfair comparison between Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles, pointing out the vastly different circumstances they faced. The fan highlighted that Richardson had recently lost her biological mother and had been suspended for marijuana use. This caused her to miss the 2020 Olympics. In contrast, Lyles had only lost a match. The fan expressed disbelief at the comparison and wrote, you comparing a cocky man’s ego to be destroyed vs a woman who had recently just lost her mother is crazy.

One fan expressed strong support for Noah Lyles, drawing parallels with Sha’Carri Richardson’s remarkable comeback. They emphasized Richardson’s achievement of winning the 10.65 meet record championships. He shifted the focus to Lyles, expressing confidence in his ability to showcase his best talents when needed. The fan concluded by praising both athletes for their remarkable performances and expressing admiration for the rivalry between them.
