There were two American runners in the World Athletics Championships this year who were believed to be capable of getting the coveted sprint doubles. Sha’Carri Richardson was the female contender for the challenge, while Noah Lyles maintained the vanguard on the men’s side. Yesterday, the American team experienced both jubilation and disappointment after the two talented athletes entered the 200-meter finals.
Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles both got the first lick of success at the World Athletics Championship in the 100-meter race. Thereafter, they hoped to continue their dominance in the 200-meter final on Friday. Richardson lost the bid to Jamaican national champion Shericka Jackson, but Noah Lyles managed to write his name in the history books.

American ace sprinter Noah Lyles is on a mission to prove himself as the best in the business. His third victory in the 200-meter sprint has underscored his open challenge to the Jamaican legend, Usain Bolt. Lyles wants to occupy every spot in the record books and become the new face of track and field.
For him, winning the double gold in the 100 and 200-meter sprints at the World Athletics Championships was more than just a personal victory. His wish was to earn back the honor for America, which has remained with Jamaica for over a decade.
Travis Miller, the social media director for NBC Sports, celebrated the moment with a chronological recap on an X post, “Men who achieved the #WorldAthleticsChamps 100m/200m double”. It had a list of athletes who had previously won the iconic double victories.

The World Athletics Championships’ podium had always been the stomping ground for American athletes in the past. Going back almost 25 years, American sprinters dominated the 100m and 200m events. It started with Maurice Greene in 1999, Justin Gatlin in 2005, and Tyson Gay in 2007. Since then, the feat has consistently eluded American athletes. No one came close to Jamaican track and field supremo Usain Bolt’s blazing speed. He had posted the record thrice between 2009 and 2015. Since then, no one has been able to replicate his feat until Noah Lyles came along.

Young Lyles breaks Usain Bolt’s streak
After the race, Noah Lyles spoke to the media, announcing, “the double is done. It’s done. It’s alive, it’s thriving”. He was grateful to his trainers who prepared him for this challenge in Budapest. This victory also helped him give a bold answer to the doubters who did not believe in the merit of his challenge to Usain Bolt.

The Floridian has faced comparisons to Usain Bolt, with many questioning his ability to outdo the Jamaican icon. They do not believe that Lyles can match Bolt’s record of 19.19 in the 200-meter dash. Lyles finished the 200-meter final in 19.52 seconds, a fraction away from his personal best. The recent double champion, who is already running quicker than Bolt did at his age, said that he will be ready to achieve that time in the near future.
