Kansas City Chiefs and their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes picked up multiple awards at the 2023 ESPYS. While the reigning Super Bowl Champions won an ESPY for Best Team, Mahomes picked up Best NFL Player and Best Men’s Athlete. Legendary skier, Mikaela Shiffrin won the Best Female Athlete award.
The ESPYS (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award), is an annual awards show celebrating excellence in sports and serves as a platform to honor exceptional athletes and teams across various disciplines. After being snubbed from this year’s ESPYS, through a powerful tweet, American track sensation Sha’Carri Richardson without holding back, voiced her opinion on a number of things related to track and field.

In her candid tweet, Richardson called out the ESPYS for what she perceived as disrespectful treatment towards her. She expressed her frustration in her tweet and wrote, “The ESPYS invited me when my life was in shambles as if I was a charity case.” The track star was referring to her 2021 ESPYS appearance, just four days after she lost her place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to indulging in a banned substance. Richardson went further to highlight the perceived lack of recognition and appreciation for the sport of track and field within the United States. This emphasizes the immense skill and dedication required to compete in track and field.
The ESPYS invited me when my life was in shambles as if I was a charity case. The disrespect that track & field receives in the USA alone is nasty. Half of the athletes there now could not do what we do on our WORST day. #espys

Through her message, Richardson drew attention to the stark contrast between the performances and abilities of track and field athletes and those of their counterparts in other sports. Taking a jibe at the ESPYS, she boldly claimed that many of the athletes present at the ESPYS, perhaps even half of them, would struggle to match the skill and tenacity exhibited by track and field athletes on their worst day. Despite no awards at the ESPYS, Sha’Carri Richardson has been in some of the best form of her life recently.
