Track and field and football are more closely related than many might assume them to be. The debate about who is after has fascinated and divided the fans for years. On Saturday, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill smoked the competition at the USTAF Masters Indoor men’s 60m race. Widely regarded as the fastest NFL athlete, Tyreek ‘Cheetah’ Hill ran 60m in 6.7 sec. Hill generated a lot of hum with his impressive performance. However, Olympic gold medalist sprinter Michael Johnson had a different opinion.
After Hill comfortably won the 60m event, Michael Johnson went on a Twitter spree. Johnson didn’t hide the fact that he was upset, posting multiple tweets about the NFL star.
Not the kind of attention Michael Johnson wanted

Earlier today, the four-time Olympic gold medalist shared a tweet about the Dolphins player’s win. “Tyreek Hill runs a 6.70 60m at the USATF Indoor Masters Champs. Puts him outside the top 200 in the world this season,” explained the tweet. “Can I add to your headline? Exactly where you?d expect a fast NFL player to be?” the US legend wrote.

Far from done, the Olympic legend was just getting warmed up. “A 10.18 sprinter claims he can compete with the world’s best. No one pays any attention because it?s ridiculous right?” Johnson wrote in another tweet. “But when it?s an NFL star things change,” added the four-time Olympic gold medalist. It is noteworthy to mention that prior to retirement, Hill was a track and field star in high school with two state champions.

But when it’s an NFL star things change. I get the intrigue but unless that race happens the media attention puts them on equal footing. And who does that hurt?

However, the Cheetah pursued football instead of a track and field career. Despite posting a career-best 100m time of 10.18 sec, Hill has claimed he could beat Usain Bolt. Johnson, who had also shared his distaste during the Tiger Woods tampon incident, kept the tweets coming. “For everyone saying ‘track needs all the attention it can get’ This is track attention yes, but do you see any Olympians or World Champions here?” wrote Johnson in another tweet.
The track and field star expressed that this isn’t the kind of attention the sport needs. “I get the intrigue but unless that race happens the media attention puts them on equal footing. And who does that hurt?” wrote Johnson.

Tyreek Hill vs. Usain Bolt
While Hill might be the fastest sprinter in the NFL, how does he stack up against someone who earned the accolade of the fastest person in the world? In 2014, the wide receiver ran his fastest recorded 60m dash. The NFL star ran the distance in 6.64 sec.
While Hill’s time is impressive, Bolt is the faster athlete on the track. Usain Bolt never ran a 60m sprint, but when he set the 100m world record, the Jamaican ran the first 60m in 6.31 sec. It’s unlikely Hill could beat Bolt’s time at 29.
