Is the role of a supportive coach underestimated in the journey of athletes like the Lyles brothers?

We all need some help in our lives from time to time. While the urge to do everything by ourselves can be significant, it just isn’t practical at times, and Keisha Caine couldn’t be more thankful that it is indeed the case. The mother of Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles, Caine has often faced rough waters during her life. But, thankfully, she had a few people to extend a helping hand during the trying times.

By now, track and field fans know well the mountains Caine and her sons had to traverse to get to where they are now. The Seton Hall alum also revealed previously how she and her sons used to have little money to keep themselves afloat. Things have changed since, but Caine hasn’t forgotten those who chipped in to help out the struggling family when they were down.

In the October 6 episode of the Got It From My Momma podcast, Lyles’ mother noted how Noa and Josephus have been blessed in their lives. Elaborating on on how she was grappling with keeping up with her sons’ dreams to be professional track athletes because of the troubles in her married life, Kaine revealed that an unexpected shoulder came forward to help her out. “One of their high school coach, he would actually take them to practice for me,” she said during the conversation.

She went on to say how she often found herself entangled with work, which made it difficult for Caine to show up for Noah and Josephus’ practice sessions. While that broke her heart, she also knew that their coach was there to help them keep their heads in the game. “When I couldn’t be there physically, their high school coach did so much,” the Lyles brothers’ mom acknowledged his contribution to their lives. However, she also revealed that this person left the mortal world recently.

The host also lauded Caine’s contribution to the success of the latter’s sons. “I see in this podcast with moms of people who have excelled in whatever platform, they’ve been given that cheerleader mom behind them just saying, okay, you wanna do it, let’s figure it out,” the host could be heard saying in the Spotify upload. Surely enough, Kaine has been resolute in her support for Noah pursuing his Olympic dream.

Keisha and Kevin Lyles divorced in 2008. After that, Keisha lived with her two sons in their uncle’s basement. However, a former athlete herself, Caine refused to let her spirit break. Instead, she took up a job in sales to keep the family afloat. But that doesn’t mean they could lead a lavish life. On the contrary, Caine later noted how she used to feel heartbreak when she couldn’t buy her sons the things for their sprinting needs. She once spoke about how she was left saddened after not being able to buy her sons $11 shoes from Walmart. But her support never wavered. “I told myself I’m not going to be a wreck,” she told herself and kept pushing onward. Now, her eldest son is an Olympic gold medalist and is revered as The World’s Fastest Man, while her younger is a World Junior Championships winner.

Talking about his mom’s struggles, Noah told NBC, “My mom is a hard worker. I remember her saying constantly, ‘I don’t care what the job is as long as I’m able to make money for my family, I’m gonna do the job, and I’m gonna do it to the best of my ability.’ ” The 2024 Paris Olympics 100m gold medalist now sits atop a $5 million valuation, and he isn’t looking to stop right now.
