Is Noah Lyles' handling of controversy a lesson in resilience for athletes facing public scrutiny?

All Noah Lyles cares about is Junelle Bromfield’s well-being. The controversy featuring the US and the Jamaican track and field athlete has been raging for quite some time. Owing to the pre-existing fierce track-and-field rivalry between the Jamaicans and the Americans, fans could not process the loving bond between the two. To add more fuel to the fire, Lyles spoke about getting inside information about the Jamaican camp from Bromfield on the Track World News podcast in July. As a result, both the sprinters, especially Bromfield, found themselves in the firing lines of the fans.

Soon, things started getting worse for the Jamaican. Becoming a victim of acute online hatred, Bromfield was termed as a ‘traitor’ by the people of her very own motherland. And quite expectedly, such a scathing attack left the mental health of Bromfield in shatters. But despite all the dark clouds hovering around, Bromfield’s only silver lining was Noah Lyles. Always. He took extra efforts to comfort her ladylove and also spoke out publicly in Bromfield’s favor.

Lyles recently joined Junelle Bromfield and Simone Clarke in an episode of ‘Sim Soul Sessions’. He acknowledged the public scrutiny regarding their relationship, referencing the comments he made on the Track World News podcast that drew criticism for Junelle Bromfield and for not including a direct apology. Lyles reflected on his past experiences as a public figure, stating he never intended any harm and recognizing he couldn’t control how people interpreted his words. On being asked about his role in all the fiasco, the Olympic gold medalist came out pretty straightforward.

Noah Lyles shared how his only goal is to keep Bromfield safe and secure. He stated, “Unfortunately I can’t control how people take things but the first thing that I want to make sure is that you know Janelle is okay with everything because that’s whose opinions I care about.” Expressing his love for Bromfield, the men’s 100m winner pointed out that he wanted to stay with Bromfield for a long time. Thus, he needs to ensure that his girlfriend remains healthy mentally and physically.

Lyles also opined that he is trying his best to make things normal and right for Bromfield. Although the situation might still remain sour among the fans, once the Jamaican got out of the trauma, that’s all Noah Lyles cared about. And while Lyles does have a reputation of talking big, this time around, he is really putting in all his efforts to back the love of his life.

Managing online hate is one thing. But when that hate spills over into the real world, things really get scary. Noah Lyles, maybe in a lighthearted manner, spoke about getting all the inside info about the Jamaican camp from Bromfield. This opened the floodgates for the hate to seep into reality. Things did not take much to escalate and soon, Bromfield started to get death threats. It went to such an extent that the Jamaican Olympic medalist got scared to step into her home country.

He also specifically called out the hate directed at her from her own country. Lyles noted, “The most impressive thing I’ve seen recently is how she’s dealt with the pure disrespect and hatred towards her from her own country. This woman has been attacked by people who have never met her, heard her name before, never seen her smile, or heard what she believes in.”

He then took Bromfield to visit his hometown in Alexandria, Virginia. With the overwhelming reception the duo got from the people, it acted as a mental balm for the Jamaican. Noah Lyles further went on to say that Bromfield has always interacted with people who have an eye for greatness. Exuding confidence on how Bromfield will surely get over the dark phase, Lyles said, “You never have to ask. She’s not going to stay where she is.” Thus, with things going haywire at the moment for Junelle Bromfield, the overwhelming support she is receiving from Lyles might just be enough to see her through.
